Welcome, Mr. pappy.
We'll probably be looking into adopting a dog this summer, or perhaps next. I never thought about a greyhound before, they are adorable.

They are also hands down the best tempered dogs I've ever encountered. They are so quiet and contained they're like a Jane Austen heroine.

One thing about Akita's is that 'other things' will soon learn to stay out, or will not be a problem for long, except for my son.

But if they are with other dogs, they can learn to bark and bay.

Racing greyhounds have spent their entire lives surrounded by other dogs in incredibly close quarters. They're still quiet as church mice.

The results of the wife trying to carry the collar back in her hand were not plesant but probably very entertaining to everyone else.

I hear you Doc, but your extreme circumstance just made my first point for me. It's hard enough to stop one of these animals with a 6 foot privacy fence if they decide there is something on the other side they want. Not to mention the racers are use to running through the pain as injuries are fairly common on the track. Plus we still haven't done anything to keep the neighbors grumpy pit bull out.
Believe me our group gave this issue plenty of thought. Pet-Safe in Knoxville wanted our program to endorse their invisible fence product. They offered us some substantial financial incentives to do so. In the end we had to turn them down because we didn't think it was the right tool for the job.

I have actually known a couple of asshole greyhounds. Not super-vicious or anything, just really obnoxious and one was a little bit dog aggressive.
OTOH, when I had a greyhound, my advanced greyhound containment technique was that I once said, "Oh, no, honey, don't leave the yard." He had pretty much no prey drive, though, which is the biggest obstacle to containment regardless of breed. There's really no foolproof amount of training or other non-physical barriers that will keep a dog in full-on prey mode from chasing.

I should have mentioned that the other dog is not a greyhound, and now when someone comes home there are 4 voices in the chorus. So being around other greyhounds that are also quiet doesn't prove anything.

I've had a lot of fosters so I've actually know several asshole greyhounds. Like any breed each has an individual personality. Yes many of them bark. A lot more of them are whiners. High prey is something that our adoption group tries hard to deal with by placing the high prey hounds in appropriate homes. Truly aggressive dogs go back to the track which is a shame because that is basically a death sentence.

Re: Another f段n new guy
Soooo, anyway, just to summarize. You're a middle aged guy, going back to school like a nerd, living in the dirty south, and you foster used dogs.
Are you a real guy, or some kind of demographic homunculus of the Freethought Forum or something?
Either way, you should stick around.

Re: Another f段n new guy
LOL! Oh I’m a real guy alright complete with many of problems usually associated with middle aged guys. As far as school goes that is a recent decision. I hate what I’ve been doing for the last 10ish years. Teaching people how to do business with the government sucks. In the meantime my comms skills have grown rather out of date. So I’m going to try something new and see how that works.
Huntsville is probably not typical of what most people think when they hear Alabama. It's not real big, but we have the 2nd largest research park in the US. NASA literally started here. Army Aviation, Missile Command and the Missile Defense Agency live here. So does the Defense Logistics Agency which means most Army contracts are ultimately let from here. 45% of the local workforce are professionals, and we have more genuine rocket scientists per capita than any place else on the planet. We also made someone’s top 10 list of nerdiest places to live last year. All of that is a good thing because it means that a lot of the people that live here aren’t actually from here.
And the dogs, well they are my children. It makes me feel good every time another one goes to a good home.

Welcome to PopeyesPappy.
My greyhound story is:
I do not own a greyhound but my Uncle used to own racing greyhounds.

Re: Another f段n new guy
My greyhound story is that two greyhounds mauled my dog when it ran under the fence of our rental property and tried to make friends with them. They slipped their muzzles and mauled him pretty badly. Admittedly he was a chihuahua so he probably looked like a rabbit.
I was twelve at the time and saw it all. Pretty traumatic.
Anyway, that's beside the point. Welcome PopeyesPappy!

The coast isn't really Alabama either. So you can live in Huntsville, or on the beach, and be somewhat removed from the dirty part.

I am just North of Gulf Shores (like a block N. of the city police jurisdiction lol). Closer to Pensacola than Mobile, actually.
