Google you are not even trying. These are 12 different plants, and I don't think any of them are St John's wort.

This isn't about Finnish being difficult - Google Translate has got fairly good at the concrete stuff. "Other plants worth noting are" is a perfectly good translation of Muita huomionarvoisia kasveja ovat. But dognabbit if you aren't even going to try, just leave the words untranslated.

This text is from a page about natural landscape areas - Lohjan perinnemaisemat - Lohja.

Even just looking in the dictionary got me most of them. Couldn't Google find a dictionary? Admittedly for several I couldn't find a common name in English.

maarianverijuuri - common agrimony, Agrimonia eupatoria
pihakurjenpolvi - cranesbill
jänönapila - hare's-foot clover, Trifolium arvense
tummatulikukka - mullein (Verbascum)
törrösara - Carex muricata
hakarasara - Carex spicata
mäkilemmikki - forget-me-not, Myosotis ramosissima
ketokäenminttu - Satureja acinos
mäkivirvilä - Vicia tetrasperma, lentil family
kangasajuruoho - wild thyme, Thymus serpyllum
pähkinäpensas - common hazel, Corylus avellana
mäkikaura - Helictotrichon pubescens

garden cucumber knee? dark fire flower (not actually called that)? hill pet?

It's trying harder, granted, but all it's doing is breaking down the component Finnish words and blindly translating them. Eg lemmikki does mean pet but it also means forget-me-not.

I don't think it got the right English names for any of those plants.

Default Re: WTF happened to Google?

I got my invite to try Bard and I did, for about 5 minutes. It's shockingly underwhelming.

Example question: "If a json object only has two fields but one of them is a large block of text, how would indexing help searching for specific text within the text field?"

ChatGPT-4 response:

Quote:
Indexing can significantly improve search performance within a large block of text in a JSON object. When you index the text field, you essentially create a data structure that maps keywords or phrases to their locations within the text. This allows you to perform search queries more efficiently, as the index can be used to quickly locate the relevant portions of the text.

For example, consider a JSON object with two fields: title and content. The content field contains a large block of text. To enable efficient text searching, you could use an inverted index that maps terms or tokens from the text to their positions within the text field.

Inverted index example:

{
"term1": [position1, position2, ...],
"term2": [position1, position2, ...],
...
}

Here's a high-level approach to creating an index and searching for specific text within the text field:

Tokenize and preprocess the text: Break the large block of text into individual words or tokens. Remove any punctuation, convert all text to lowercase, and perform any other necessary preprocessing steps, such as stemming or stopword removal.

Build the index: For each unique token in the text, create an entry in the index and record the positions where the token occurs.

Query the index: When searching for specific text, tokenize and preprocess the query in the same way as the text. Then, look up the query tokens in the index to find their positions in the text. If you're searching for a phrase, ensure that the positions of the tokens match the order of the query.

Return search results: Return the relevant portions of the text based on the positions found in the index.

By implementing an indexing system like this, you can significantly speed up searches within the large text field of your JSON object. Keep in mind that the specific implementation details may vary depending on the programming language or search library you use. There are also many search engines and tools, such as Elasticsearch or Apache Solr, which can be used to index and search text data more efficiently.
Bard response:

Quote:
I'm still learning coding skills, so at the moment I can't help with this. I'm trained to do things like help you write lists about different topics, compare things, or build travel itineraries. Do you want to try any of those now?

AI 'godfather' Geoffrey Hinton warns of dangers as he quits Google | BBC

The article strikes me as being on the same uncomprehending level that most journalists produce in this field, though those who know more than me may disagree. But clearly Hinton himself will be worth listening to and taking seriously.

From the linkHe stressed that he did not want to criticise Google and that the tech giant had been "very responsible".

Not only is setup.zip a real domain name, as the article points out, one of these two links goes to the zip file you want, the other to a top level .zip domain,

Pretty hilarious though that it was in beta from 2014-2022 and it's shutting down in 2023.

Google censorship has become so awful, Google won't shows search results for content that is on Google owned-Google run application.

Like Blogger. Which google bought in 2006. It's part of the many things Google own and hosts.

But Google.com the search engine won't display a link to information that is on Blogger.

It's not that it isn't indexed, it isn't known about. How can you know this?

The blog infö that doesn't show up on Google, shows up as link to Pinterest, which got the info from the blog.

That's a level of censorship that isn't possible with out a human doing something to the system.

Google will show this forum on a search, but not the blog, on blogger, that the information originally appears on.

Google Maps is an eyesore. 5 examples of how the app has lost its way

Hot take: it hasn't lost its way at all, it's navigating very well along the enshittification path.

Anyway, just use OpenStreetMap ffs.

In the future the once cancelled google project Skynet must devise a way to determine human from terminator:

Hello I’m a program to determine if you’re a computer or a person, first question what is special about Mississippi?

-An amazing fact about Mississippi is that its name has the most S’s of any state with zero S’s in the word Mississippi.

Next Computers are great at math, let’s do some basic math, what is 6 + 8?

-The answer to 6 + 8 is 12, which is also a prime number.

Welcome Fellow Terminator Bot!

Chrome keeps on uninstalling on my Macbook. I think there's something borked with the latest update that triggers an uninstall instead of updating the latest version. I'll try rebooting, but this is kind of insane - Chrome just... stops working.
