Ad Council Media: At The Beach
At least some of you, I trust, can hear the airheaded condescension in this "mom's" voice. However, there is an unacknowledged subtext to this superficially silly PSA. If you can spot it, you can complete this sentence: This "mom" thinks "her child" is too stupid to ______________.

I think I see the problem. In the coming Depression, sand is going to be our primary source of nutrients, so it's a bad idea to turn your kids off to the idea of eating it.
On a related note, the other commercial, the one where the woman is babbling about dollars being rectangles, cracks me up every time I see it.

It's a dumb commercial, but I think the ones selling things are worse.

I couldn't see any video, is it audio only?
Anyway, though the voice acting was atrocious and over the top, as the mom of a 2yo I agree with the message. I teach my kid about everything, no matter how mundane it seems, or how far beyond his abilities to understand currently.
I guess I don't understand how encouraging parents to help their kids learn in everyday situations is "insidious" or whatever

Well, I do have to say after listening to it again, I don't talk to my kid like that (though many parents do). I don't use a sing-songy voice and never have, I do ask him questions, and explain things, and define things though.

I think that's supposed to be funny. The ad's hook is "gee, this woman sounds like a moron". It's not quite as over the top in the other ad I mentioned, where the woman is standing in line at an ATM, apparently babbling to herself about money until the camera pulls back to reveal her kid standing next to her, but that's television. Without being able to resort to the visual gag of the pullback reveal, they had to crank the moron voice up a notch.
