Perhaps our universe is indeed a computer or information processing system that's just booted up and seeded its system with a set of energy which does stuff for a few hundred billion years before settling down into either black holes or empty space to then be used for whatever processing. With things like life just interesting patterns that arise from this set of variable start conditions.
