Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
A news story about the RP.b getting a RAM upgrade reminded me it exists, but I don't see any way to buy it in the States. Am I missing something or is that a thing?

I saw that page but there's no "buy" button next to the board itself!

It was there when I posted it! In fact, I am so lazy that I still have the window open. JUST SO YOU KNOW I AM NOT LYING:

That makes it look as though they ration the number of boards they'll sell in a day, so maybe check again tomorrow.
ETA: And then I go look at my reader just now, and see a Raspberry Pi story posted yesterday on Tech Crunch. That might've spiked the sales for the day. Weird, though, huh?

This is what I get now:
Why Register?
Unfortunately, due to the high demand we have experienced today, we have temporarily suspended sales of the new Raspberry Pi board while our systems catch up. Please add your name and email address below and we will contact you when you can place your order. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
I can send you one if you like (original 256 MB version). I have two of them and I've now ordered one of the 512MB versions which should be here in a few weeks. I can manage with just one for the time being.

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
I mailed the Pi to you this morning by air mail. I don't know how long it will take to arrive, but it will give you time to get the necessary bits and pieces together so that you can start using it straight away once it gets there.
Remember you need: - a 5 Volt power supply with (ideally) a current rating of 1 Amp or more, and a micro USB connector. You probably have a phone, camera, USB or tablet charger that will be suitable.
- a regular-sized SD card, at least 4GB capacity. Not all SD cards work, so if you have to buy one, check on-line before you buy. You need a PC with an SD card interface so you can write the initial (free download) operating system image to the SD card
- USB keyboard and USB mouse
- HDMI cable to hook it up to your TV or monitor
- Ethernet patch lead for initial connection to the Internet
- Not necessary, but you may wish to make or buy a case for it
It cost me £30.87 when I bought it, and £3.86 to mail to you. That works out to about $56.40 USD total (so much for the '$35 PC' - but that's UK taxes and shipping costs for you)!
No need to send me the money; please put it towards the running costs of the if you pay the bills then you don't have to do anything, and if liv pays them you can sort it out with her.

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
I guess it should have arrived by now?
I've set my Pi up now to work with a tiny EDIMAX EW-7811Un WiFi adaptor, so now it's easier to move it around the house and connect it to different bits of hardware and still have an internet connection without messing around with Ethernet patch leads.
I've built up and tested my Gertboard kit, which adds some buffered I/O, A/D and D/A converters, a motor driver and a co-processor to the Pi.
A tricky thing to solder as it has quite a few ultra-tiny surface mount resistors and capacitors. Element 14 has now discontinued the kit and told people still waiting for it that they will now be (eventually) offered a ready-built equivalent. I'm glad I got my kit early as I quite enjoyed building it myself.

Oh, hey! I ordered one of these today. It's supposed to ship on November 19 or something like that?

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
13 days to ship? They must have sent it on a boat I suppose, even though the receipt they gave me at the Post Office says 'Air mail.'

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
I finally cleared some space on my desk and assembled the required components to put this guy into service. I was fortunate enough to have an extra HDMI-capable TV, keyboard/mouse, HDMI cable, and network cable laying around. I had a 2GB microSD card in my camera, and with the help of an adapter I got from Shottlebop--and the luck of having a built-in SD card reader on my desktop computer--I was able to build a boot disk.
So far all I've done is boot it, modify the config.txt to accomodate some weirdness with the video and connect via SSH but I know more fun will come.
Thanks again ceptimus!

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
You really need a bigger SD card; you'll soon run out of space on the 2GB one once you start installing and/or creating things.
Unless you have a project that requires lots of storage, it's probably better to buy a couple of 4GB cards rather than one 8GB - that allows you to swap between two different set-ups when trying things out.

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
Thanks, I'll buy a few 4GB cards. It's amazing how cheap storage is these days.
I forgot to mention I'm getting power from a wall socket via my Samsung Galaxy Note charger cable.

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
If you only want to ssh to the Pi, then you don't need to connect an HDMI monitor, and you can still run a graphical desktop when you want by using a free VNC client such as RealVNC on a Windows box.
It's best if you have a fixed IP for the Pi - I have 192.168.1.5 for the wired ethernet and 192.168.1.8 when the Pi is connected via WiFi
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.8
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
I think maybe ssh is enabled by default now, but on the old Debian release you had to do this just once to enable it:
sudo bash
ssh-keygen (press enter three times to accept defaults and blank passphrase)
service ssh start
sudo update-rc.d ssh defaults (this makes the daemon auto run at startup)
From Windows, I use PuTTY to ssh to the Pi for a console. To use a graphical desktop you need to install vncserver on the Pi; you only need to run the following two lines once
sudo apt-get install tightvncserver
tightvncserver (supply password twice, No to 'read only' password)
Then whenever you want to fire up a graphical interface you first enter the command on the pi (via ssh I guess):
vncserver :1 -geometry 1360x768 -depth 16 -pixelformat rgb565
(I made a script for this so I don't have to type it in each time)
You then use RealVNC viewer to connect to 192.168.1.5:1
It works surprisingly well - fast and slick. Better than cluttering up your desk with two keyboards, mice and monitors when you need to have a full sized PC running too.

Re: Raspberry Pi discussion
I just found a little primer. Stashing it here for possible future reference.
So you got a Raspberry Pi: now what?

Did I post this here already?

I think I might get one of the starter kits with the breadboard.
Mine finally arrived after like a month or so of being on backorder, but they sent the wrong charger and anyway I don't have any of the keyboard or TV or anything I need, so it's just sitting in the static bag not collecting dust. I think that will be my project over the winter break.

Because of your non-stop propaganda, I have ordered a Raspberry Pi book for the library. I can only hope there are people in Flint cool enough own one.

If you have a Big Lots nearby, they should have at least the charger and keyboard there, usually around $5 or so. They also have them at like office stores and stuff, but they charge lol amounts of money at those places.
I was using someone's cell phone charger for mine and got it set up and stuff, but then they took it back, so mine went back in the static bag, too, until I get around to replacing it. Which I have not as yet, because I am too important and busy to go to Big Lots.

It's been lying around since then.
But when I have the time, I will make it do tricks. Not coincidentally, around the same time I bought five brushless motors with about 1000 watts each, 13x6 propellers and a couple of quite small transistors. They come in normal, tiny TO-220 packages and I asked someone if he thought one of them could handle 70 amps. He looked skeptical. Then I gave a hint: they are called RFP 70N06.
