Re: Miscellany
One of the things that has really hit me since I started working in the heart of a city is that there are people (specifically: crane operators) who have to climb 15 flights of ladder every morning to get to their cubicle. That's impressive enough, but then watching them walk around on top of the thing makes me so grateful that isn't my job.

Re: Miscellany
My dad was a crane driver. I actually liked going up there on the metal ladder.
Now those wind turbines freak me out. Probably because there isn't a chair when you get up there.

I imagine it's very annoying when you've climbed to the cab and then realized that you left behind something important, for example something to drink.

Re: Miscellany
There may be a better thrad for this but I think it unlikely.
I saw a poster for the new film of Pet Sematary the other day and something struck me about it, and then I saw it again and the same thing struck me.
You know that phenomenon whereby, if there is an author "Stan Coker" who's written a book called "Petunias", then a film adaptation called "Petunias" may be faithful to the source or not, but a film adaptation called " Stan Coker's Petunias" is almost certain to be only loosely connected to the source and/or overwhelmed by the director's ideas and fancies. (If anyone can supply a name for this phenomenon, which is definitely a real thing, that would be great.)
Anyway: this poster proclaimed
PET SEMATARY
based on a novel by the author of IT |
|
OK ... wait ... don't tell me ... I'm pretty sure I know the author of IT. And that most of their target market also do.
But what are they saying here? This film is so unfaithful to the source we can't actually name the author? Or that it's so close to the novel that we want to go to other extreme by not naming the author at all? Or did someone in marketing really think "IT" was now more famous than ITS author?

Attention. I have *checks* *loses count* 45 tabs open at that site, and I've found In Case You Forgot Who Wrote It. But it doesn't completely support my opinion (it sides with claims that the film tries to be closer to the novel than alternatives, and seems to just accept that it works), so it can't be the right trope.

I mean:
Quote:
If the writer is still alive then this is intended to suggest the author did more than just sign the rights away and be done with it; if not, it's intended to suggest the creators are trying to be true to (their understanding of) the original work (especially if it's out-of-copyright — anyone can make a Dracula film). [emphasis mine]
|
There's nothing in there stating that the suggestion is necessarily always truthful.
also for the link to That Website - that was definitely what I needed on finals week. But then, it's sort of my fault, too, since as soon as you said "*checks* *loses count* 45 tabs", I knew exactly what site you meant, and I clicked on it anyway.
To answer your question, I have absolutely no idea what the marketers were thinking by not actually just saying "Stephen King", though.

Re: Miscellany
I sort of remember, Bram Stoker's Dracula to be either more faithful to the original or at least no less faithful than the Universal/Hammer/Murnau etc...
To be honest, what I mostly remember is Gary Oldman looking like a giant Q-Tip mumbling something that sounded like, "I am dry cucumber!"

Re: Miscellany
Same for Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
God, how I - inexplicably - loved that film with a burning passion.

Re: Miscellany
I saw in the theater and enjoyed it. Nice to see the actual plot of the book. I like the other versions as well, mind you.

Re: Miscellany
I spent a solid week sewing a greatcoat just like the one in the film. About 10 yards of fabric.
Developed a method of making wax wounds with real stitches.
Burning. Passion.

Re: Miscellany
Both Bram Stoker's Dracula and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein had huge deviations from the books, but at the time, neither deviated as much as p. much every other adaptation ever. Later, there was a TV - miniseries? 2-part movie? of Frankenstein that was extremely faithful, except that it still pulled a couple punches, e.g., the monster kills the nephew by accident, rather than intentionally.
I remember seeing the Frank Langella / Laurence Olivier Dracula in high school, after having seen the Universal, Hammer, etc. versions, and thinking, why the fuck can't they just follow the damned story once?

Am I to understand from "I spent a solid week" that you actually finished said greatcoat in this week?

Yes. This was when I had no men, kids, school, work, internet, netflix, actually good TV, back issues, other hobbies, age-related fatigue, or bills stealing my time and attention. Just a full unemployed week of my youth of focusing on a passion project.
When I was finished I took some steps back and actually though to myself: "Oh my God, what have I done, this is an unwearable monstrosity!"

You mean the counted cross-stitch on regular 45-count cotton fabric that I first designed and planned, then have worked on during summers only and slower now that my eyesight means I can no longer see an individual hole of that size clearly?
Actually, pretty well thanks. Wolves finished, decided to add text still.

You say it's "unwearable" but did you or do you wear it nonetheless?

To a few costume parties. Still have it somewhere in the cellar.
