Default Personal Computing Devices

I did a count of personal computing devices in our house right now. The count stands at 15.

1. This Alienware mini
2. My Chromebox
3. The Asus gaming laptop to my left
4. My wife's Chromebook
5. My youngest daughter's iMac
6. My eldest daughter's Toshiba laptop
7. My grandson's home-assembled near-supercomputer for gaming
8. My wife's Amazon Fire 7" tablet
9. My Amazon Fire 7" tablet
10. My old Samsung 7" tablet
11. My wife's iPad
12. My Samsung Galaxy J7
13. My Samsung Galaxy S7 Active (letting grandson use it because indestructible)
14. My wife's iPhone 6+
15. A Dell 24" bog-slow All-In-One Celeron-chipped POS with Windows 8.Fail (and insufficient RAM to download the upgrade to Windersten).

Some of the above will be soon seen on eBay or other internet methods of sale.

How many and what kind of functional personal computing devices do you have?

I don't think I have time to count at the moment, but I suspect the total of functional devices might be outnumbered by the count of practically non-functional devices (that have some hope of recovery, or need data extraction before trashing, or need to go to a proper electronics recycling facility).

Oh, man, I don't even know what all is in the house, really.

Ones that are my fault, though:

1. My homebuilt Shuttle desktop computer.
2. Android phone, working.
3. Android tablet, working.
4. An older Kindle with Cyanogenmod on it, which works fine but I should update to Lineage.
5. Three Chumbys, one of each major release. All are working. The Chumbys 1 and 8 are still in regular daily use, but the original Chumby sometimes overheats so it's not turned on right now.
6. XO laptop. I still have that, it still works. It dual boots Sugar and Ubuntu. I turn it on every now and again.
7. A bunch of variously broken Android/Cyanogenmod/etc. tablets and phones. Only one tablet was originally mine. There is a stupid Fire tablet that is "mine" because I soft bricked it trying to put a custom ROM on ha ha. I really should get around to dealing with that again, but man, I just don't feel like it.
8. Then I have stuff sitting in drawers gathering dust because I don't want to just throw them away, and I haven't gotten around to finding them homes, including a couple of Timex Sinclair 1000s and a Commodore plus 4 and probably some other things like that.

I kind of (but not really) regret throwing away my 4KB Acorn Atom (probably when I moved to SA) and (when I moved back to the UK) my first work laptop (ran Windows 95 perfectly well in 16MB of RAM. When I last looked you couldn't even boot Damn Small Linux in 16MB.)

Looking at some of the items, I'd like to question your use of the term "valuables".

No kidding. Total pawn value, $125, maybe $130 if you are a good negotiator.

I don't think I can be bothered to compile a full list but I estimate I have at least three times more old computer junk valued retro-computing equipment than anyone who's posted so far. I've still got my first computers in running order*: a Sinclair Spectrum ZX-48, a Commodore Amiga 500, and my first IBM compatible PC which I built myself from components as it was cheaper than buying one ready to go back then (actually it's a PC/AT: 286 processor with a whopping one megabyte of RAM and a forty megabyte hard disk).

*Well, they were in running order the last time I tried - but that's maybe three years ago for the Amiga and more than five years for the other two. I expect the Speccy will still work but it's 50:50 that the PC might need some work on its power supply and/or a replacement hard disk now.

I thought I had a lot, but I just tried to set up a machine that can read floppies and IDE drives, and out of six or seven motherboards and related junk the only one that displays anything at all says "CMOS checksum error" and quits.

Oh I have one PC that is definitely in working order that's running Windows 98SE. It has both 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch floppy drives and IDE (maybe it's EIDE) hard disks. :leafguy: I think it has a 486SX processor, but I'd have to check to be sure.
