Saw King Crimson play Sunday night, and it was predictably magnificent. I can leave this world fulfilled, for I have now seen Epitaph and In the Court of the Crimson King, two songs that weren't in the show when I saw them during the 2017 show, performed live.

Bassist Tony Levin has been posting photos on his website since the mid-1990s. Here are the pics from Sunday's show, which includes one of the setlist.

Robert Fripp, who seemed to be taking a back seat two years ago, tore it up like he did when he was 30. The drummers - Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto and Jeremy Stacey - were really on top of their game. The intro to Indiscipline was worth the price of admission all by itself, and Harrison brought the house down with his new and improved solo on 21st Century Schizoid Man, the last number of the night.

Harrison's a busy man these days. He'll be back here in December with his other band, The Pineapple Thief.

That's awesome Stephen. I caught King Crimson last tour, and they are coming to Boston again on September 19. but it's the night after my friend got us tickets to see Tycho and it's in the middle of a work week to boot. Used to be able to pull shit like that, drive up to Boston for shows two nights in row, but I know my limits... Hopefully they come around again before one of us bites it.

Been enjoying all the great stuff they've been posting on YouTube. Like this.

So what do you do when you want to perform one of your signature songs live, the studio version of the song featured a female singer, and you have no female singers in your regular touring band? If you're Steve Hackett, all you need do is give your sister-in-law a call.

Pretty much never. Gary O'Toole has worn some strange clothing on stage over the years, including a Clockwork Orange style bowler. He was dressed entirely ordinary when I saw Hackett's band back in 2016.

O'Toole has been working with Hackett ever since the Genesis Revisited stuff got rolling in earnest. However, I heartell that Craig Blundell is handling the drumming on Hackett's current tour. Blundell has brass balls the size of cantaloupes. You can tell because he tours with Steven Wilson, and playing Porcupine Tree songs live with Wilson opens a drummer up to Gavin Harrison comparisons. Craig is no Gavin Harrison, but he's great in his own right.

Going to see Earthless Friday night in New Haven. Bought Black Heaven when I caught them a year and a half ago up in Boston. Stuck it in the car CD changer on the way home from that show and I have never taken it out...

Isaiah Mitchell might be a god. Just sayin'.

Opeth is coming here too, except that every time I've seen anything at the Worcester Palladium the sound is so shitty I swear I will never go there again... Will forego the experience of listening to Opeth perform through a galvanized trash can, which is the most charitable way to describe what every show at the Palladium sounds like.

Also, this.

Well, that certainly blows! The venue is part of the attraction out here. It's only been open for a year or so, and I've never been there, but it was built specifically as a concert venue (none of that multi-purpose horseshit) and reportedly has top-notch acoustics.

How was Earthless?

Earthless...well the venue, The Space Ballroom, is the exact opposite of the Palladium. It's small but the sound system is absolutely amazing and FUCKING LOUD. There isn't a bad place to stand anywhere in the club. I don't know who this is a picture of, but that's The Space Ballroom. Way more intimate than most of the clubs in Boston, and the sound, really well tuned to the space.

I was able to get right next to the stage with no shoving no jostling, the crowd was very cool. Earthless played for about an hour and a half -- an incredible performance. Drummer Mario Rubalcaba pummeled that kit like an animal, it didn't matter I was wearing earplugs, where I was standing the bass drum hits was going through me like my body was speaker cone.

I also scored one of Isaiah Mitchell's guitar picks that he dropped while shredding -- has his name printed on it in psychedelic lettering, FNA! We all got to shake hands and talk to the band afterwards, which happened last time we saw them in Boston. Genuinely awesome people. If they come anywhere near you Stephen Maturin you should definitely check them out.

This is a video I took of them playing Godspeed with my Galaxy S4, which is so ancient it's like a daguerreotype, but it didn't come out half bad given how close to the stage and the PA I was standing. I'll post the studio version in my signature next week -- this cuts off about halfway through the song but it'll give you some idea of how Earthless was.

This is pretty good stuff (™). Pisces by Jinjer. My favourite Ukrainian metal band ... never mind that they are the only Ukrainian band I can think of. (They describe themselves as progressive groove metal.)

Listen to the first minute; appreciate the beautiful, almost fragile vocals, the cool, proggy guitar work and percussion.

Then at 1:10 appreciate the different quality of vocals Tatiana can produce.

You may or may not have the reaction of these two - "I don't understand life anymore. What just happened!?!?!" - but don't say I didn't warn you.

That's impressive - a lot of bands give those vocals over to a man in the group. The only other band I know that does that is Arkona, and she's not singing in the same... uh.. range.
