Remember that graduate program I was working on when I first rolled in here? Tomorrow afternoon, I will officially graduate with a Master's degree in History. :shakeschool:

hello boys and girls and gender non-conforming

this is a drive-by hooting to let you know i miss this place and all the inmates that are running the asylum

i am still on the planet, sorta shell-shocked, in the most literal interpretation of the term, and sort of trying to find my footing again... i am not much good to anyone at this present moment, but i can be entertained so it is my hope to assume lurker status for a while as things normalize for me...

for those who remember, my tranny boy is sprouting man-hairs since he began his HRT late last fall... according to the girls, his deepened voice is dead-sexy... his gender therapist pointed out that he is literally in a second adolescence and has to move thru developmental stages while his brain accustoms itself to testosterone... great, says i to her.... an angry 14 year old developmentally, licensed to drive and old enough to buy his own smokes...

he is a total dick to live around, which is why i have moved into a remodeled out-building to go bat-shit crazy on my own...

you cannot know how much i have missed this place

i cannot remember all the protocols and steps to making this all fancy and funny but if i could, it would be fucking hilarious....

hearts and hugs would be here

I'm in California for the week, at the San Francisco Baking Institute, taking an advanced techniques class. I work as a production manager at a large artisan bakery in Portland Oregon, and I'm here at the school with one of the partners in the company, the head baker, and my fellow production manager.

The class is being taught by Didier Rosada, who is awesome; and my classsmates include bakers from Singapore, Seoul, Montreal, Miami, Phoenix, Venezuela, France, California, Montana, and a miller from Quebec. Pretty exciting.

I already miss Qingdai and young Shadow, and will owe Qingdai big time when I get back after she does the child-rearing solo for the week.

I'm sharing a hotel room with the other production manager and yesterday we spent an hour walking around industrial South SF in search of beer. Which we found.

Now I'm going to go drink one I think, before meeting my coworkers for mexican food.

Okay La Nueva Perla was p. great. I ordered the octopus and shrimp ceviche and it was very good. Plus two modela negras later and the partner said, "It is way too early to head back," and we went to a local bar where the head baker said to the bartender, "She'll have the Jameson with a couple of cubes," and he said,"A couple of cubes of what?"- he was like George Carlin with a lot less teeth and without the humor. But two gin and tonics- 75% well gin and 25% tonic- later, I am doing pretty good but better hit the hay soon for the next day of class. Damn!

I guess I should post this somewhere outside the countdown thread. I made an offer on my first house and it was accepted by the buyer. So the process has begun.

There is a leaky shower and a permitting issue that we still need to work out. Here's a picture:

Soooo ...

I got the call. That job for which I stuck a big teal deer in the Cloaca about? It's now been offered to me. With full relocation package and promotion. The manager is basically fucked if she doesn't get me to accomplish her NAFTA and CAFTA certification program for the year. Kafka Inc. stands to lose millions if they don't get said certifications done on time -- and "on time" means well in advance of the end of the year.

She's said I can begin and get their curlies out of the fire remotely to start with, so it's not like I'd have to fly out there next week. But the job is ultimately to be placed in California, no budging on that. And speaking of no budging, I had to give her a verbal acceptance just now so that HR can send me the formal written offer (email is considered formal enough). After I get that, I will have either 24 or 48 hours to accept or decline.

Wife is calling me as soon as she gets to her office; I didn't want to tell her while she's driving. Tonight we have some serious thinkin' to do. I'm mainly concerned about Li'l Puppet. At age 3 the move out here was easy for her, emotionally. At age 9 it's gonna be a helluva thing. Not just speaking generally, but specifically for the kind of kid she is.

As for me, oh, I'm fine, really. :hyperventilate:

My promotion finally came through, along with my new salary :cheer:.

A 25% raise after tax is not a small amount... Maybe I can finally afford to rent a place of my own!

I received a 3.25% raise, the most I've gotten in about 15 years.

For those that like math, that represents about $1.11 an hour increase.

It's official. My deadline to start in the California office is April 1st. I proposed the date myself (after some pressure to get my ass out here before they decided to cancel my relocation), so it's not an April Fool's joke on me. I just figured I should go with an auspicious date, and The Ides was too close.

The fambly is staying here to finish out the school year, although they'll come for a few days in mid-April for househunting. Still haven't had an offer on the house, and if I'm not in contract by the first week of May, we'll have to take the crappily low company buyout option. What with the prices in the Gay Area, I may end up saddled with PMI for a year or so if that happens, due to the lower-than-expected funds I'll have for a down payment. Not the end of the world, but not ideal, either.

Gonna be tough on the Li'l Puppet. She's pretty attached to me for some odd reason. I have to prepare her for it the best I can this month, but she'll prolly make Mom's life difficult while I'm gone.

Speaking of abandoning your loved ones for extended periods of time, people keep asking me about my summer internship, "what's bey going to do?!"

... uh, probably the same stuff he always does, only without me there, and maybe other stuff too?

How fucking codependent are people?

it would appear that when the seasons are a-changin' I just want to sneak back in here to make sure this place is still ... well, this place

still dealing with really major head fucked-uppedness, practically a hermit, but staying busy shifting my 5+ acre "rural residential" property into a farm cooperative based on permaculture design principles... we are officially Bootleg Hill, (name based on the history of a moonshine operation from in the vicinity about 80 years ago)...

would someone kindly remind me how to post photos ... I would like you to meet banjo and noble, the mini geldings we got this past fall when the discussion about food production went from ""what if we...?" all the way to "wtf are we waiting for?" ... heritage breed chickens coming when the snow melts ... our conditional use permit is for 24! (we are technically within the city limits).. we also have acquired an official barn cat named inky ed and he is reaffirming my long held belief that cat + inside = asshole

it sorta feels like when the seasons are a-changin' I just want to sneak back in to make sure this place is still ... well, this place

Salutations, all.

Y'know, sometimes months will go by that I don't pop in here, but when I do, I invariably spend hours catching up on my favorite threads, and I feel a bit like an interloper if I post anything. But I still read the threads and since I know many (most?) of you in one form or another (or at least it feels like I do), here's my lastest stuff.*

* And also, I got beat up the last time I popped in and didn't update this thread.

I returned from Izmir twenty days ago and home is just now starting to really feel like home again. By "home," I mean the US in general, but also my home here in Colorado Springs with Mich. Being apart for two years was hard (the last year was ten times worse than the first, when everything was new and I was busy all the time), but coming home was strangely unsettling. I'm ok, but I never expected it would be hard to leave a foreign country and my life there, particularly when I had all this to come back to.

Anyway. For those of you who don't know, Mich and I got married last year. (Pics here.)

We went to Victoria B.C. for the nuptials. 29 Feb 12. We invited no one except for a handful of Canuck friends who were nearby anyway. We didn't want the hassle and frankly, didn't have time for it. But we did get some great pictures. :)

As of May 1st, Colorado will extend rights to civil unions and--of course--our marriage is automatically included. And the military is about to extend some rights to same-sex partners anyway, regardless of what the SCOTUS rules on the Prop 8 and DOMA, so...tiny steps, but life is good.

I came back to USAFA mid-semester, obviously, but it turns out that my timing was impeccable, as the department has two pregnant captains who are both on bedrest and won't be back for the rest of the semester. This means I'm back in the saddle Tuesday morning (last week was spring break) with two sections of freshman comp and two sections of senior public speaking/advanced writing.* By my second day back, I had a stack of papers to grade. Yeah...I can tell how much they've missed me.

* We call it "advanced," I think, to drop hints that they should now be out-performing their freshman counterparts. It doesn't always work.

Mich is doing great, too. She's beautiful and smart and witty and snarkier as the years pass (whereas I'm softer and gentler and more accepting as the years pass). Perhaps 'tis true: we're growing together. In another 15 or 20 years, y'all won't be able to tell us apart (and we'll look like our dogs or something).

I have another three years and change of active duty, at which point I will have the choice of retiring. I'll probably be picked up for lieutenant colonel around that time, though, so...we'll see. I gotta admit, though, having the rest of our lives to travel and just be sounds like heaven to me, so even if i'm selected, I may not accept the promotion. We're working to pay the house off so we can just punch if we choose to, anyways.

I know I'm not around here (or on any actual discussion forum) much anymore, but I always feel like I've come back into my friends' living room when I come by here. It's nice.

So I get my contract moved to France so me and Mrs Sectus can pursue our dream of living in the country in either France or Italy. I rent a house and start moving us over there - an expensive and rather time-consuming business.

Also a business that is rather heart-breaking: we found out way too late that Molly, as a Dogue de Bordeaux without papers, is classed as a category 1 dangerous dog in France. There is no way you are allowed to import them, ever. So we go through the painful process of re-homing her, which we were able to do: some lovely, doggy-minded people adopted her. Thank goodness she is so photogenic. I feel ashamed of that. I have never gotten rid of a pet in my life. I am the person who ends up with the pets other people don't want, not the other way round!

It is a new start for us: after all the stress of running a large household on one day-job and our own business for years, we now have an opportunity to down-size a bit and choose some quality of life over the constant rat-race. Mrs Sectus was getting all burned out, and we never had time for anything. Moving to a place with a nicer climate and a slower pace of life was something we always wanted to do.

As we had some paperwork for our youngest sprog still to sort out in Ireland, I moved ahead to sort things out there. I spent the best part of two months there, working and sorting. The house was a pretty re-worked old farmhouse in the middle of beautiful countryside... so quiet you can hear an approaching car from 10 kilometers away and positively lousy with wildlife.

I went back to ole Ireland for Christmas to be with my family, and so that I could drive the remaining dog and cats over to France, taking the ferry from Cork into La Rochelle and driving the rest of the way to the south of France.

Then I get the phonecall from my boss: I am being asked to resign. They are offering a pittance for severance pay since my french contract is brand new.

Here I am, with all my stuff boxed up either here in the house we rented for the older kids to study out of (they are all in their last years of university) or still in boxes in France, and suddenly the secure job that everything was based on is gone, just like that. I was always so proud of the company I worked for: as far as I was aware, they never did such shoddy things as this. But I guess things have been changing for the worse for a long time now.

The past year has been pretty bad for us: winding down the business was very hard as every single person we ever employed or did business with seemed suddenly intent on getting their pound of flesh out of us, including friends and family. We really got to see what everyday people are like once you scratch the surface, and bith me and Mrs Sectus ended up psychologically bruised from the experience.

Now this seemed like the final blow. I do not think I have ever felt such stress and despair.

Fortunately there was no time to dwell on it. I hit the job-market pretty hard, and managed to land a new gig in roughly the same pay bracket as I had before. It is in Ireland though, so our plans are well and truly scuppered. I also found a nice and aggressive lawyer who has managed to gouge my old company for about a years worth of wages, which should allow me to get myself set up properly again here in Ireland. I could have held out for more, but I want to get started with my new job and I am sick of the endless game of silly buggers they have been trying to play.

So all in all I have weathered the storm, or rather survived the shipwreck. We are a little sadder and wiser, and all in all things could have been a lot worse, but I hope that we will get a little bit of peace and quiet for a bit now, some time to build up a new life.
