Hmmm, they must have well water, not the shitty pond water we get from Tulsa.

Come November 1st, it will be legal to carry a switchblade knife in Oklahoma, but it will be a felony to use it to cut a livestock fence. You can't use your EBT food stamp card in a strip club, casino, smoke shop or liquor store, but your canoe is now exempt from annual registration, so there's that.

Parents of a 7-year old girl changed her schools because the school, Deborah Brown Community School she attended didn't allow her "dreds", the school policy dictating "dreadlocks, afros and other faddish styles" as unacceptable disruptive hair styles. Articles written about this assume racism, but the fact is the majority of the students at Deborah Brown Community School are black, as is most of the staff and all of the administration. It is a charter school and enrollment is voluntary and kind of out of the way, considering the school is downtown, sandwiched between the railroad tracks and the parking garage where my truck sits right at this moment, not near much of any residential areas at all. The above mentioned hair standards are in their student handbook (PDF).

A test of new sonar equipment at Foss Reservoir in western Oklahoma revealed two cars that contained a total of six human skeletons, three in each car. One car pulled from the lake was a 1969 Camaro that possibly belonged to Jimmy Allen Williams from Sayre, Oklahoma, who disappeared with two friends going to a football game in Elk City in Jimmy's new Camaro. The other car is a brown and white early 50s Chevy, possibly connected with an unsolved case from the 50s or 60s, possibly one involving two missing people from Canute, Oklahoma. News reports of the car being a 1957 model are obviously false to anyone that knows anything about 1950s era American cars. The state medical examiner says it may take years to positively identify the remains.

I used to go fishing at Foss when I lived in Fargo, Oklahoma in the late 70s.

From 1917 to 1920, automobiles made from ready-made parts from a variety of companies (brakes by Bendix, gears by Saginaw, engine by Lycoming, etc.) was manufactured in Enid, Oklahoma, by Geronimo Motor Company. There were two models, a four-cylinder with an engine built by Lycoming (manufacturer of the Auburn-Cord-Deusenberg engines and aircraft engines) and a six-cylinder made by Rutenberg (Western Motors). They built as many as 1,000 Geronimos during their production run. Production ceased when the factory burned down and the company had insufficient insurance to rebuild. The only known Geronimo in existence is owned by the Enid Chapter of the Antique Automobile Association of America and driven in parades and to car shows.

Tulsa too had at least one automobile manufacturer. Tulsa Motor Company built several models on the same chassis, including the Tulsa Four Oilfield Runabout. They also had a model with a six cylinder engine, the unimaginately named Tulsa Six. One finely restored example of a Tulsa Four Oilfield Runabout is on display at the Tulsa International Airport.

Herschall-Spillman also made carousels. In fact, I thought the idea that there was also a car company by that name to be too coincidental, so I had to do some research.

Here's a page showing a connection between the two.

(I know too much about old carousels, so the company name jumped out at me.)

The frequency of earthquakes in Oklahoma has risen from an average of about 50 per year (over a certain threshold, I suppose) up until a few years ago, rising to over 3,000 in 2013. Seismologists are not quick to point their fingers at hydraulic fracturing because there is little evidence that could cause earthquakes of the magnitude being experienced. For one thing, hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells has been going on for about 50-60 years in Oklahoma. The one thing that has changed in the last few years is the shale projects and horizontal drilling as far as 2-3,000 feet away from the drill site. However, there isn't much shale play going on in the area of most of the temblors, but there is drilling going on, and produced water injection wells as well.

There are some significant faults in Oklahoma's geological makeup, such as the Meers Fault in SW Oklahoma. Historically, most of the earthquakes in Oklahoma were centered in that area, but in the last few years, most have been in in the area east of Oklahoma City. There are some geological faults in that area too, so it is possible that these swarms of minor to moderate earthquakes are indicative of major quake potential. I got to experience that 5.6 magnitude quake. Even though my home is more than 50 miles from the epicenter, it rattled the windows and knocked some pictures off the wall, cracked some masonry, and caused some additional foundation settling and an inability to get earthquake insurance from my homeowner's insurance company.

Wastewater Disposal Linked to Oklahoma Earthquake Swarm | LiveScience

Quote:
The small earthquakes repeatedly shaking Oklahoma are likely linked to wastewater disposal from oil and gas extraction, known as fracking, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
It kind of makes sense, since the wastewater re-injected for disposal and permanent safekeeping after use is designed to soften rock and be slippery.

I don't know what you mean, but the vast majority of waste water injection is brine water that was produced from the wells, not hydraulic fracturing fluids.

Fracking Wastewater

Quote:
Why Wastewater From Fracking is Such a Threat

Somewhere between 20% – 40% of the water used for hydrofracking a well returns to the surface as wastewater, also known as produced water. This wastewater not only contains the toxic and hazardous chemicals used in fracking fluid but also contains contaminants that it picks up from deep within the earth, most notably heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, salty brine and radioactive materials.
North Dakota’s Oil Boom Brings Damage Along With Prosperity - ProPublica

Quote:
The downside is waste — lots of it. Companies produce millions of gallons of salty, chemical-infused wastewater, known as brine, as part of drilling and fracking each well. Drillers are supposed to inject this material thousands of feet underground into disposal wells, but some of it isn't making it that far.

But fracking waste water is but a fraction of the total water produced by oil and gas wells. It's not 20-40% of the waste water; you get 20-40% of the frack fluids back with the produced water.

Seems like some of it squishes back up to the surface.

Fracking of America

Quote:
Fracking consists of pumping millions of gallons of water, sand and various toxic chemicals (known as fracking fluids) thousands of feet down a well and out into the oil or gas bearing geologic rock formation at high enough pressure sufficient to cause that formation to fracture or crack. These fractures can extend hundreds of feet from the wellbore. After the desired fracking has occurred, the pumping of fracking fluids ceases and the internal pressure of the rock formation (the formation pressure) causes the injected fracking fluids to return to the surface (this is known as flowback). The flowback waters are often highly contaminated upon reaching the surface and are usually stored in pits or tanks until removal by truck.
Doesn't this stuff then get pumped into old wells and mines for disposal?
