Found another video link courtesy of the b3ta newsletter. Holy.CRAP. There's tons of videos on this site. The only thing that's unsettling is the url. http://www.worksafevideos.com/music_videos/. Sounds like spam to me.

Of course! Although I wasn't there to see them so much as JCC. It wasn't a Specials gig, it was some band that the Specials' drummer had put together with some of the members of the other contemporary ska bands. I think it was he that told me that in producing the Specials's first record, Elvis Costello spent more time under the mixing desk with a bottle of vodka than actually producing the record.

Sorry about the additional derail ... just reminiscing here. Now that I think about it, I had no idea who the band was that John Cooper Clarke was opening for. I was sitting outside at a picnic table when these guys came along and asked if the rest of the table was taken.
I was sort of eavedropping on their conversation and asked them whether they were in a band. At one point I ended up coming back to the table from the washroom with the drummer when it dawned on me who he was. I said to him, "Wait a minute ... you're the guy that played drums on Monkey Man? Let me shake your fucking hand!"
After that we had many laughs (and pints). They had some chick singing with them; she was a bit of a snot, but the boys in the band were all pretty cool characters.

The original is much better, IMO. The hard rock guitars just don't create the same ambience and really detract from the melancholic beauty of the song.
