Re: WTF happened to Google?
Oh. My. Fucking. God.
I rue the day I decided to just be lazy and get a stupid Nexus tablet and try to use it as is.
So a while back, I let my guard down, let it install a system update, and it was like, "OH, HEY. YOU ACCIDENTALLY ROOTED YOUR TABLET THAT IS OK WE FIXED IT," thus breaking like half the shit I had set up on there.
Then, yesterday, again, I let my guard down and let it install a bunch of updates to a bunch of apps just to get it off my back about it, and it was like, "OH HEY, I THINK SOME KIND OF GIBBON OR SOMETHING ACCIDENTALLY CHANGED YOUR ICONS AND STUFF IT IS OK WE FIXED IT" and now I have all these ugly, irregularly shaped, stupid looking icons and stuff and everything looks like shit.
Seriously, I am so fucking sick of stupid forced 'upgrades' that try to wrest control of my stuff from me. Fuck you, Google. Fuck your shit so hard.

Tech companies are like that kid who hands you a video game controller only to rip it out of your hand mere seconds later screaming "You're doing it wrong! That's not how you do it! I love co-op modes, don't you? No don't touch that!"

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I could easily believe some party or other, or even just an internet troll, found a way to abuse that, causing a need for cleanup, which is going to look partial no matter how google does it.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
GOOGLE MAPS HATES TWIN HOMES
Quote:
Instead of navigating workers to a duplex on Cousteau Drive in Rowlett, Texas, Google Maps took them a block away to Diaz's duplex on Calypso Drive.
"[Google's] mistake caused me to lose my home," she told CNNMoney on Friday.
Google acknowledged the Maps error in an email, and said it's investigating the cause.
"Google Maps did indeed show incorrect information for the houses in question," a spokeswoman told CNNMoney. "Both addresses were shown as being in the same location (7601 Calypso Dr) on Google Maps... the issue was fixed as soon as it was brought to our attention."
Google Maps now points to Diaz's home accurately. Apple Maps, Yahoo Maps and MapQuest also display the correct information.
|
Now, I've tried to help the Google Maps when I find a discrepancy. I've been refused at all turns. I can only assume the Google Maps just don't care!

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Oh, they obviously don't care. I've contacted them about having my address wrong, even pointed out that their own photo clearly shows my correct address. Nothing. I'm still getting calls from baffled pizza delivery guys and having to talk them in.

I've had some google maps corrections accepted. That was some time ago though. And it took several months.

I don't even know how Google thinks the highlighted phrase is related to my search term...

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Helping users easily access content on mobile
Quote:
Although the majority of [mobile-friendly] pages now have text and content on the page that is readable without zooming, we’ve recently seen many examples where these pages show intrusive interstitials to users. While the underlying content is present on the page and available to be indexed by Google, content may be visually obscured by an interstitial. This can frustrate users because they are unable to easily access the content that they were expecting when they tapped on the search result.
Pages that show intrusive interstitials provide a poorer experience to users than other pages where content is immediately accessible. This can be problematic on mobile devices where screens are often smaller. To improve the mobile search experience, after January 10, 2017, pages where content is not easily accessible to a user on the transition from the mobile search results may not rank as highly.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Has ES been rigging search results for Hillary Clinton? People are saying it!!
Donald Trump attacks 'biased' Lester Holt and accuses Google of conspiracy | US news | The Guardian
Quote:
“Google search engine was suppressing the bad news about Hillary Clinton,” the Republican told a cheering crowd of supporters in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Neither Google nor the Trump campaign responded to requests for comment on this accusation, which seems to stem from a report in Sputnik News, a Russian state propaganda outlet. The reference to Google did not appear to be ad libbed as it was in Trump’s prepared remarks.

Are they really "guests" if they have to pay?
I guess it works for hotels.
At least Airbnb hosts get a cut.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I'm putting this in the Googly thread but that's only the most recent example.
Google Home devices stop responding to Burger King's TV ad prompt | Business | The Guardian
Quote:
The 15-second ad features a man in a Burger King uniform leaning into the camera to say: “OK Google, what is the Whopper burger?”
People with the Google Home assistant and Android phones with voice search enabled within listening range of their TV discovered that the command triggered devices to read aloud the Wikipedia entry for Burger King’s flagship burger.
|
Thank you, thoughtless advertisers, for prompting thoughtless customers to think a little bit about the negative implications of thoughtless home assistant products.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I am 100% on Burger King's side on this one. Just because they are not a partner invited by Google doesn't mean they shouldn't get to share their tale too.
They could have been a little subtler with the Wikipedia edits, but other than that, they did nothing wrong.
Bless you,
