When I was at the National Building Museum a couple of years ago they had an exhibition on FLW's skyscrapers. They had a section on Price Tower and a fascinating set of drawings of Illinois Sky City which would also be fun to build in Lego but somebody would lose an eye.

The Price Tower is one silly fucking skyscraper. The rooms are odd shaped, the elevators are odd shaped too and fit no more than 3, maybe 4 friendly people at a time. They're not nearly as claustophobic as the stairway. The building's original apartments all had twin beds, not because FLW had some penchant for abstinence, though he may have for all know, but because twin bed mattresses were all that would fit in the elevators. He was a nut.

I heard about that on NPR a few days ago -- sounds pretty neat!

In fairness, FLW did sacrifice structural integrity for artistry on more than one occasion. Fallingwater, for instance, has had to be strengthened and shorn up on numerous occasions over the years, to keep the thing from collapsing. Even so, I'm thinking that it might be worth a cross-state drive some time, to see it in person.

Cheers,

Michael
