News Hooray. We're In ... Delaware?

You may have already guessed but I am incredibly jelli that popular states like Oklahoma and Lolorado have their own news and reports thrads. Truth is I only vaguely pay attention to real news anyway let alone anything that happens around here. Oh, I'm not really about to correct that behavior, but I am creating an easy to index repository for all the stories I trip over on the internet about Delaware.

Previously, on This Old State:

I haven't passed by an update to the forensics story, maybe if I'm feeling motivated I'll do an google search. (ES: Update the googles for me, pls.)

There is a minor update to the I-495 story: As of sometime last week the southbound lanes have been reopened. I assume they're still shooting for pre-Labor Day week/end to get the whole shebang going again. And as far as I know they're still researching who to blame and fine for causing all this nonsense.

And now today there is a great news story that is right up :ff:'s alley!

Cremated Remains ("Cremains") Found in Funeral Home

Quote:
Nine unclaimed containers found inside a Dover funeral home contain the ashes of nine victims of the 1978 Jonestown Massacre, according to Dover police and the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security Division of Forensic Science.

The discovery was among 38 small containers of unclaimed ashes found inside the former Minus Funeral home by the property's owner, said Kimberly Chandler, a spokeswoman with the state Department of Safety and Homeland Security. She said Thursday she didn't know who the property owner is and when they made the discovery.

State forensic investigators responded last week to a request to check the building after the containers were discovered. Dover police provided assistance.

"It was definitely a shock when we found out exactly what we had," said Dover police spokesman Mark Hoffman. "Obviously it's an intriguing story and a tragic story, and to think this was found right here in our jurisdiction, about six blocks from the police department, makes it very compelling to us."
Nearby Dover Air Force Base is the hub where (all/most?) American bodies are shipped if they die overseas. Though I'm only about 80% confident in that statement as it sits. I know for fact that all servicemen and women go through the Port Mortuary. I'm not sure how arrangements work for regular civilians in non-governmental roles are processed. So it would seem standard procedure to use the facility to accept and process large numbers of people, like we had at Jonestown.

As the article states, no one is certain how those remains found their way into a civilian funeral home. My uneducated guess leads me to believe that the large numbers of remains from Jonestown couldn't be handled by the Port Mortuary alone. Rampant conspiracy speculation wants me to say that it's possible their are urns of other remains at other area funeral homes.

So.

Anyway.

Here's our :ff: thrad for the Luxembourg of the USA. I'll do my best to make you proud.

Delaware backstory: Cannon's skull now spends Halloween at Smithsonian

*Reposting entire article as the original is technically not available at the source.

Quote:
For ages, the skull of Delaware's most notorious murderess was put on public display for Halloween, but nevermore.

It was that of Patty Cannon of Sussex County, the notorious head of a crime ring that kidnapped free and freed African Americans in the 1800s and sold them into slavery in the deep South.

Called the nation's first female serial killer, she died May 11, 1829, in Georgetown, awaiting trial on charges of murdering a white slave trader and two children.

After her death - a suspected suicide by poison to avoid hanging - she was buried outside the Sussex County Courthouse.

But her own bones did not rest in peace. Her grave later was moved and courthouse employee Charles I. Joseph reportedly got her skull at that time, said Margie Cyr, Dover Public Library director. "It hung on a nail in his barn," she said.

Later, he gave the skull to a relative, Alfred Joseph, who donated the skull to the Dover Public Library in a storage box lined in red satin, she said.

For decades, the skull was brought out for a Halloween display that also promoted reading about Cannon's disgraceful chapter of Delaware history.

Cyr doesn't know when the displays ended. "It was many years ago," she said, as laws were enacted to limit displays of human remains. After that, the skull sat in storage - until the library was on the move. "Last year, when we were packing up and getting ready," Cyr said, she contacted The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

The skull's tale proved too intriguing for The Smithsonian to pass up. The skull is now on longterm loan, under Douglas W. Owsley, the Division Head of Physical Anthropology at The Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. His goal is to learn everything possible about the person from whom it came.

No one ever challenged the skull's identity, but there are no known historic images of Cannon and, Cyr said, "there was a fire at the courthouse that destroyed all the records." Her birthdate is unknown, but historians say she was about 70 when she died.

Marrow analysis has proven the skull is female, Smithsonian spokeswoman Katie Sabella said. Owsley also confirmed it is consistent with that of someone about 70 years old who died when Cannon did, she said.

Proving identity may be elusive. Comparing descendants' mitochondrial DNA, passed by mothers, is not possible, since Cannon's only daughter had no children, Sabella said.

And whether Cannon died by suicide may stay a mystery.

"We cannot at this point check for the ingestion of poison as cause of death because that sort of toxin would not be evident in the bone if it killed rapidly," Sabella said.

And while the skull no longer is there, a visitor recently went to the Dover Public Library just to check on it, Cyr said.

Charles Joseph of Hendersonville, Tenn., the donor's grandson, wasn't disappointed the skull was gone or not on display, she said, adding, "he was glad to hear that it's at The Smithsonian."
:skullglomp:

Was guided to this story while looking at stuff related to the cremains from the previous post.

Other states have done all that first. The only thing Delaware has going for it is lax incorporation laws.

Delaware is notorious amongst acupuncturists as being a state where the existing board of acupuncture is full of acupuncturists who refuse to license any one who applies to get a license. We have national competency tests and many state have extra requirements, but Delaware. They got a board and said, screw anyone else, this state is ours.

According to this article, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has been eliminated, the entire department dismantled and everyone terminated/released/fired. Including the Chief Medical Examiner himself. The functions of the OCME have been shifted to the Department of Homeland Security, and during the interim, an outside agency is performing any and all tests on evidence.

In addition to being a poor manager, the former CME turns out to be a guy with more ambition than brains.

Quote:
A News Journal investigation of Callery's outside work in March showed that, since at least 2000, he had a thriving side-business as an expert witness-for-hire, testifying in court proceedings both inside and outside the state, earning him at least $200 an hour on top of his state salary of $198,500 a year.

According to Callery's own résumé, he was deposed as an expert witness or testified at a trial out of state on at least 28 separate occasions between 2010, the year drugs began disappearing at the Medical Examiner's office, and 2012.

Furthermore, Callery moonlighted at as a contract pathologist for both the state of Rhode Island and Chester County, Pa. In the case of Rhode Island, Callery performed 173 autopsies or examinations in that state between 2008 and 2011, earning a total of $189,000, according to records obtained by The News Journal.

"It also appears that Dr. Callery served as a private expert in at least seven cases that were handled by the OCME in violation of the state's prohibitions against conflicts of interest. And it appears on numerous occasions Dr. Callery may have given false information or testimony regarding his professional experience," wrote Landgraf.

The News Journal located at least one of those cases where, in 2008, Callery testified in a Sussex County civil case as a privately-hired expert to dispute the findings of one of his own employees.

The News Journal's March investigation also detailed apparent discrepancies on Callery's resume, which was submitted as an exhibit in an out-of-state court proceeding.

Callery's 2012 resume indicates he worked as a staff pathologist at A.I. du Pont Hospital for Children, the Southern Chester County Medical Center in Jennersville, Pa., and Union Hospital in Elkton. Officials at all three medical centers disputed those claims.
*Emphasis mine

An independent report was prepared by Andrews International and can be found here.

As a final note, remember when I was an juror?

One of the guys pictured in this article testified at that trial.

I can't even imagine how district attorneys wanted to tear their hair out if they had cases that had any reliance on the OCME this year.

Why would a medical examiner's office have drugs? Aren't their "patients" all dead already?

Oh, wait, they also do drug testing, and probably forensics on the packaging.

Wilmington, Delaware needs a good boar rampage to sort things out. As it stands, the tiny city of 71,000 is more dangerous per capita than notorious Detroit, Michigan.

Default Re: Hooray. We're In ... Delaware?

Matlock's post over in Lolorado reminded me that some things may have actually happened in Delaware recently.

But first some follow up: 495 is fully open now and has been for a number of weeks. They actually almost totally met their estimated open date of Labor Day weekend. The southbound lanes were finished and opened first the week before Labor Day and the norhtbound lanes followed soon after.

Alright, on to new news.

Governor Markell was not twitter hacked.

Quote:
Gov. Jack Markell caused a stir Thursday on Twitter when a tweet posted on his account promoting an education event instead linked to a suggestive photo of an Estonian model.

A member of Markell's staff sent out the tweet during an event at Warner Elementary in Wilmington about 10:30 a.m., distracting from the governor's announcement to direct $5 million to low-performing schools.

It included a link to the photo and was deleted 17 minutes later, according to the website Politwoops, which archives tweets posted then deleted by politicians.
I'm not hip with any local scenes so I don't know how truly scandalous this was. My morning radio show (which is out of Philadelphia) talked about it briefly, but otherwise I haven't seen any repercussions or fallout from it. Though the subject of the accidental tweet may have been harassed unduly but she weathered it like a bamf saying this:

Quote:
"There was a 4-year-old innocent candid/selfie of me that was accidentally posted & deleted by a politician today," she wrote on Facebook. "I was wondering why I was being contacted by reporters. Instances like this make me consider cutting ties from all social networks. I have no personal association with any politicians."

And after receiving twitter messages, some critical, from others who saw Markell's post, the woman responded: "I don't deserve to have my integrity or that of anyone I know questioned because of a stranger's error."

In less than lighter news, a professor at the UofD (go blue hens) sounds like a conspiracy whackadoo.

Quote:
And now, in what may plant further seeds of mistrust and suspicion, a major Liberian newspaper, the Daily Observer, has published an article by a Liberian-born faculty member of a U.S. university implying the epidemic is the result of bioterrorism experiments conducted by the United States Department of Defense, among others.

And while some commenting on the article were critical, the number who praised it was telling. “They are using” Ebola, wrote one, “for culling the world population mainly Africa for the…purpose of gaining control of the Africans resources criminally.”

The piece purports to describe scientific findings from various “reports,” which are not cited in detail, and even references the bestselling thriller, “The Hot Zone.”
I read The Hot Zone many years ago. I liked it enough, thought I preferred the more fictional work The Cobra Event. (Caution: Some disturbing descriptions in that book.)

And now back to entertainment: Former Mythbusters Tory and Kari to host Discovery/Science channels Punkin Chunckin event.

Punkin Chunkin is a bit of a redneck festival that used to be held in Sussex County. A bunch of people get together and see how far they can throw pumpkins. The big draw are the giant contraptions they build to toss the Halloween squashes as far as they can. The event has been bought and moved to Dover and will now be held somewhere behind Dover Downs Speedway. I've looked at a map and guesstimated how far the pumpkins can fly and it should make the events interesting.

Quote:
Science Channel and Discovery Channel coverage of Punkin Chunkin has helped boost the profile of the contest with each passing year. Even though the event originated in 1986, Punkin Chunkin plays like an unofficial Mythbusters festival since it aligns with the tropes of the contraption-creation weird-science series. Byron, Belleci and fellow departing Mythbuster Grant Imahara have hosted the networks’ coverage of the event for the last three years. Since last month’s departure announcement, fan have clamored for their return to Mythbusters, and Discovery recently pledged they were going to try and find other projects for them.
My first thought was that it would be my chance to meet a couple of somewhat famous people and gush a bit at them. But I'll probably just end up avoiding the event because I'm really lazy.

TRUE ULTIMATE SADNESS

Quote:
Pumpkins will not be flying this year in the annual World Championship Punkin Chunkin festival, according to Dover International Speedway.

The speedway confirms that the event has been canceled for this year. It was scheduled to take place Oct. 24-26.

Tragedy Strikes Bidentonia*!

Quote:
Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter was kicked out of the Navy Reserve this year after he tested positive for cocaine, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

A Yale-educated lawyer, the 44-year-old Hunter Biden was commissioned as a Navy ensign May 7, 2013 and assigned as a public affairs officer at a reserve unit in Norfolk, Va., the Journal reported. But just a month later when he checked into his new unit and was given a drug test, he popped for cocaine.

He was discharged in February of this year.

In a statement, Biden said it was "the honor of my life to serve in the U.S. Navy, and I deeply regret and am embarrassed that my actions led to my administrative discharge. I respect the Navy’s decision. With the love and support of my family, I’m moving forward.”
The not awful news: He took his lumps like a good little boy. Not only did the Navy want to discharge him, but both he and daddy let him be discharged. I say this because, as you all know, sometimes people in positions of power get real weird about might be scandalous and try to hide it.

WHAAAAA...???

I wanted to be a reserve officer when I graduated in 2012 at age of almost 35 and they said I was too old! :hmph: I even had prior service, which is supposed to count for something.

Is it a Navy thing, a lawyer thing, or a son of a VP thing? :chin:

It's possible that he got a waiver because he had a JD (:lolwut:) from Yale.

For some reason I thought the death penalty in Delaware had been suspended. I don't mean from way back in the 70s, but for some thing that happened in the 90s. I was all living happy in my pretend world and people were being executed right under my nose and I had no idear.

Beyond the terribleness that Delaware still has a death penalty, after the most cursory googling I disovered that we had a freaking gallows until 2003. It had just been hanging around because the stupid legislature thought it was a good idea to give convicts the choice of mode of execution. They did that way back in olden dayes of 1986. And even then. The last person to be hanged (sentenced anyway) happened in 1996.

Delaware is fucking weird you guys.

Rapist and Murderer Sentenced to Death

Quote:
A Delaware judge has set a Dec. 4 execution date for a man convicted of raping and killing a University of Delaware student.

The judge resentenced James E. Cooke on Monday following the state Supreme Court’s rejection of an appeal in July.

The execution date is a formality, however, as a new round of appeals gets under way.

The 43-year-old Cooke was convicted of the 2005 murder of 20-year-old Lindsey Bonistall of White Plains, New York.

The Delaware Supreme Court overturned Cooke’s first conviction in 2007 because his public defenders, without Cooke’s consent and despite his repeated claims of innocence, argued he was guilty but mentally ill.

Cooke was retried, convicted and sentenced to death again in 2012.

Do you want answers?

Do you want the truth?

YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH.

I also have to admit my failure. Last week WHYY aired a special talking about DuPont Highway and I forgot to watch it. I'm hoping to find a place that streams it online so I can show it.

:skydive: :pottydance: :waldo:

edit: I FINDED IT.
