Would it help to keep in mind that your father had a long and hopefully happy life, Kyuss Apollo? I was in a similar situation three years ago when my father died. He too was a WWII veteran, albeit on the wrong side. He finished the war as a 21 year old lieutenant with mortar shrapnel in his left shoulder. Lucky him. Had the mortar fragment hit him about 20 centimetres to the right and down a bit, he would have died 67 years before he did. Instead, he was given a piece of paper authorising him to make his own way out of Soviet army encirclement in East Prussia and after recuperating in a hospital in Bremen finished up being taken POW somewhere near Munich. He married in 1952 and here I am with four other siblings. Maybe you have a more or less similar story to reflect upon in regard to your own father insofar as mine had a long and fortunate life despite all the odds.
