Re: Star Trek is awesome
Captain Picard is an inspirational character. I am also inspired by the man himself, Sir Patrick Stewart.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
Oh man, Star Trek is something that I can always watch when it's on. Pretty much any show, but the new stuff.
Half the time TNG would come on, at first it'd be for simple background noise since I was busy doing other things, and within one episode, those "things" I was doing would be put on hold just for me to sit and watch.
My favorite Trek things are the original movies, specifically 2-4, but I generally try and watch as much as I can. There's so much, and let's be honest; it's been doing the whole expanded universe thing way before Marvel, which makes it even larger!
So much to watch, so little time. But in due time.
You know what's cool too? Star Trek is a good factor for finding a lot of new friends that I will most assuredly click with. Always a good sign.

I never watched Enterprise until very recently. I think the theme music put me off, it sounds like 1983. Also, Bakula (sp?), I never really went for his type shows, but I like him in this role. Anywho, once past the theme music, it's p. cool.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
I think Enterprise often gets a bad wrap because it's saddled with a lot of Star Trek baggage. From being set in the past when the writers seemed to want to do Voyager 2, to fans having a variety of expectations, it's not that bad of a show separate from everything else. That a bunch of sometimes genocidaly inclined hillbillies are founding members of the federation seems crazy; that they are human explorers out to shoot at the bad guys and hopefully not fuck *everything* up in the process, that's much more believable.

Happy 86th birthday today, Nichelle Nichols!
Here she is from the San Diego ComicCon in July 2018 (when it was announced that it would be her last convention appearance, unfortunately, due to issues with advancing dementia).

Re: Star Trek is awesome
The Orville season 2 has started and it's pure unadulterated nostalgia. From the style of orchestra music during travel to the done many times tropes, to the returning trek actors, to the feeling that they could have done more had they really tried.
That's not to say I don't like it, it's well done nostalgia, almost too well done. I can't help the sneaking feeling that we are being toyed with a bit. Like would I be amused to see the actor who played the doctor on Voyager guest star with the actor who played the doctor on enterprise bounce off of each other as aliens stuck in a house together, yes I would but it seems kinda like blatant pandering.
One of the few breakout differences is treating the characters like people who have issues they don't know how to solve but are trying, instead of perfect beings with no conflict.

Re: Star Trek is awesome
While I'm Star Treking, might as well go all the way. Saw the Season 2 premier of Discovery. Short version, I liked it. Longer version, they've clearly said through the episode that they aren't backing down on a lot of things that make it Discovery from the season long arc to the Mary Sueing of Michael, to sticking with the more futurist kelvinish look to the show, but also that they are willing to learn and adjust. So if you absolutely hated it, you still will but this episode felt lighter and happier than many of the first season episodes even during tense situations. Frankly I think the episode is worth a watch just for the brilliant deadpan of Tig Notaro as a federation officer. A second is to watch Tilly science the shit out of things. The show hasn't kept it a secret that this season will be delving into Spock and Michael's sibling relationship and that's gotten some people's heckles up.
People who want to complain have been complaining about all the continuity issues that think wont get resolved with others shows and they annoy me, it's as if they've never seen a Star Trek before. Continuity errors is like a Trek thing! Besides the franchise hasn't shied away from changing the timeline before, and even if those events were rare on a galaxy scale it still means the Trek timeline is constantly being fucked with in some way, maybe through the power of God like aliens, maybe because you had too much smuggled goods in your craft and you owed some money to an ion storm.
So far it's felt like a season 2 Trek Episode where they've finally laser scalped off rough areas and are hitting their stride. I think judging this season against the sum of all other Treks is going to be a much fairer fight for Discovery.
