By a remarkable coincidence, I have to figure out how to implement the MS Graph SDK and API etc. in one of two iOS apps I have to finish by April 5.

Last Friday, one of my coworkers was running into this weird Clippy error. (Clippy is the linter for Rust, basically it checks the code against a bunch of rules that are suppose to reflect best practices.)

In Rust, a lot of functions return a common type called a Result. It's a type with 2 parts, a success part Ok<T>, with a user-defined success type T, and a failure part Err<F>, with a user defined failure type F.

It's pretty common to get a result and then call map() - you transform the success result into a success result of something else. A stupid example might be you get back a string, then you map it into a word count. The key bit here is that you start with Ok<string> and now you have Ok<integer>. If you want to extract the value from the Result, you need to unwrap() it.

Unwrap() will panic if the Result is a failure - that will end your program. If you have a perfectly acceptable value you can derive from the failure, you can call unwrap_or_else() to transform the failure into a value.

This Clippy rule doesn't like that... and was giving an error against my coworker's code.

This pattern is fairly common in our code, because sometimes an http request gives us an failure like "NotFound", and that's OK, it just means we use a default. Regarding my earlier example, a failure just means we didn't find any text, and 0 is perfectly fine for the word count.

This is what my coworker was trying to do. He talked about it with another coworker about how to fix this Clippy error. They discussed options for a while, and eventually searched for more information.

The first result?

A sternly worded GitHub issue written by me 4 months ago, complaining that the Clippy error is both not a very good suggestion and that the suggested fix is broken.

They just took my advice from the Github issue and suppressed that Clippy error.

This could also be a sociological topic but I'll put it here:

For Men Who Hate Talking On The Phone, Games Keep Friendships Alive

I've found Discord's been interesting this way in ways that exchanging Skype contacts failed to do. I'm not sure if it's the ability to just idle in a room somewhere and see who shows up, old friends and people you just met in a guild, or if it's the volume of people gravitating away from Skype (Have)/Facebook(Do not have).

Not having Facebook was an obvious hindrance for keeping in touch, my bestie from high school's in China right now, teaching, and we never know which email is going to make it through the Great Firewall. I'll see if I can pass him my Discord.

I don't think I ever posted this.... I think I wasn't happy overall with the images, but I was looking at my older photos and decided I liked this after a bit of editing.

This is a closeup of the metal contacts on a SmartMedia card. This is a obsolete format that I have from an older digital camera - probably a late '90s/early 2000s one.

This is on my list of "get better pictures of this".

I bet those companies love it when people post cute and funny fuckups like that as a distraction from how insidious those things are.

5 4 3 2 ... (2024) ZNN reports today of a massive security breach, a hack implemented on the now almost ubiquitous Amazon door cam has allowed hackers to steal live feeds from doors all around the world for years. Hackers sold the processed data to deep fake ID theft rings that used it to unlock the person’s face ID bank accounts and cell phones. “They didn’t even need to walk into my house to rob me blind” said one victim.

As per the data breach shelter act of 2021, if you or a loved one has been affected by this breach, you may send a stamped postcard with your name, citizen barcode and address to the D.C. reclamations office and they will send you 1 (one) bouquet of flowers and 2 (two) 50% off coupons for a product or service of the breached companies choice, which will settle all debts and grievances with the affected corporate human being.

(oow a triple!)
Game Developers, “Please steal our game rather than buy from the G2A marketplace.”

G2A, a grey market key reseller and basically a major criminal scam sitting in the grey areas of international law More than a few game developers have outright said they condone pirating of their game if it prevents a purchase from G2A. G2A makes it extremely easy to sell stolen or fraudulently obtained game keys extremely quickly. Many of these game keys only last a few days before they are flagged and stop working, leaving angry customers that call up the games tech support and leave bad reviews for the game, causing the developers time and money. Thus just stealing the game and never bothering the developers is financially better for them than this resale market.

It gets better!
Not having this, G2A sent out a letter to multiple publishers, like Kotaku, containing an article they wanted them to publish stating that this was an “unbiased” and “truthful” look at G2A and how it is impossible to sell stolen keys on the site. But also if they could do them a solid and throw that whole Publisher, reader trust thing out the window and not mention this article was a sponsored post sent to them by G2A, it would be totally cool of you and we will even pay you money to keep that a secret!

Of fucking course multiple publishers posted the e-mail in full, with a WTF? Next to it. G2A has claimed the rogue employee who sent the e-mail was fired. I’m sure everyone trusts that’s true.

c-c-c-combo breaker!

I made my way through this playlist over the last couple days, and what can I say?

Building an 8-bit breadboard computer! - YouTube

One of the comments on one of the videos called this guy the Bob Ross of electronics. Once I read that, I couldn't stop hearing it. He talks about "and now we have the A register and the B register connected to the bus" and I can't help but think "happy little B register".

So now of course I'm clicking around the internet stores looking at breadboards and things, and I have to ask myself, do I actually want to build anything, or did I just enjoy watching the videos and watching him make the stuff? I mean, I can watch Bob Ross for hours and I have no desire to paint.

So I went ahead and ordered a little babby learning kit with LEDs and transistors and stuff, no logic gates or anything, just to see if it was fun to play around with. But now I'm thinking, am I gonna want to get a soldering iron? A voltmeter? An oscilloscope? We'll see where this goes.

In the meantime, I dusted off my Raspberry Pi last night, in case I decide I need an Arduino, because it would be entirely too straightforward to program it with one of my other existing computers.
