I really like fan groups that get involved in doing good. One I admire is the Star Wars fan group the 501st Legion that does a similar thing. They are mostly dedicated to cosplay and their members visit hospitals and libraries and other community events. They also have some droid makers in the group. They are very involved in Star Wars Reads Day, which is coming up soon and something I wish my library celebrated.

Janet, that sounds really cool. I will be checking it out!
HPA does Accio Books to collect books for kids. Having such an extensive home library, plus computers and Kindles and iPads and shit...I find myself astounded by how many kids have no reading material at home. And have never visited a library. Kiddo has real relationships with the city's Children's Librarians, he's been going there for programs and books since he was an infant
The open disdain that Panem’s ruling class feels toward the districts that support the Capitol is not unlike the disdain demonstrated by politicians who fight tooth and nail for the elimination of programs that keep people off the streets, keep children fed, keep schools from crumbling to the ground, keep benefits in place for veterans, etc. Blame is heaped on those who require the assistance, while the system that puts people at a disadvantage from birth is upheld — not only as fair, but also as natural and sacred.
Excellent, because now I have somewhere to dump this only tangentally-related thing that I have been meaning to post but couldn't figure out where.
Does anyone else who read the Hunger Games books, especially the third one, think that Cover Girl has sort of missed the point with their "Capitol Collection"?
Depends on POV. Think of the Conservatives who vote against their own self interests because they actually think they can bootstrap theirfuckingselves (or coattailhangonandup) to the upper class, and openly disdain others who are economic equals? Those people actually identify with the Capitol rather than find it shallow and heinous.
they put her in a shitload of makeup for her photo-ops at the makeshift hospital, and she washed it all off because she didn't like it. Then when she was sitting down with the war wounded talking to them face to face, she was super relieved that she wasn't wearing that ridiculous Capitol makeup because she would have felt like a superficial asshole if she still had it on.
Then again, that was all in her internal monologue, and the collection is based on the movies, not the books. It's just too bad if that message is going to be all watered down in the movies, but I guess that's what usually happens when you make movies from books. Le sigh.
OMG great article, and I almost lost half a day diving into all those links and videos* but then I remembered I have way too much to do and closed all my tabs. But I will come back!
In the meantime, though, check this out. When I first when to the Cover Girl website, I started with district 12 because I wanted to see if they were going to do coal or fire or both. Turns out they went with coal (with a little "flamed out" mascara for the Catching Fire tie-in) and check out my favorite part ...
