When was the first strap-on used in space(flight)?
OK so in fact SX stands for "Space Exploration", this particular Stack Exchange. And the questioner is possibly naive.

The first use of the term "strap-on" in Google Ngram viewer is in 1930 and presumably that wasn't about a booster being attached to a rocket for additional thrust at lift-off.
When was a strap-on booster first used in spaceflight; beyond Karman, suborbital is allowed.
Was it in the late 1980's when the term had a sudden rise in popularity?

I'm afraid that most of those uses of "strap-on" may have nothing to do with rockets, but with the other kind of strap-ons (much more common, somewhat smaller, made of latex; please don't Google this at work).
