WASHINGTON– The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta today announced that the FAA has determined that airlines can safely expand passenger use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) during all phases of flight, and is immediately providing the airlines with implementation guidance.

It's about fucking time. Yeah, yeah, first world problems. I'm just glad they finally figured out how to shield the cockpit from the pilot killer rays emitted by my Kindle.

It's been known for a long time that electronic devices didn't cause a problem but there was a very remote possibility that maybe they could, so the ban was mostly a precation. One that was tested over and over in real world flight conditions as more than a few pilots admit to forgetting to airplane mode their phone without problems.

First world problems aside, plenty of non-verbal and other people use iPad or similar as assistive devices. They were already allowed to keep their devices on, thanks to ADA, but try arguing with a flight attendant about it when you are fucking non-verbal.
