Re: What's up with you?
I so wanted to see Bob Mould in Boston show last Monday, but I had another commitment about 80 miles away at the exact same time. I knew it was gonna be a once in a lifetime opportunity, to see him doing all those old Sugar tunes and apparently Husker Du too.
Well at least one of us got to see him!

Re: What's up with you?
My God, it's been nearly two weeks since I've visited you all! Time flies, and all that. Holder of our second is considering our request for a short sale, and we expect to hear in another week to 10 days. Mrs. ShottleBop is checking out rentals on the local craigslist. We've been looking for something under $2,500/mo.; I woke up middle-of-the-night with budget numbers burbling up, unbidden and untameably so. [STFU, spellcheck [if that's your real name], "untameably" IS correctly spelled!] Result: I got up shortly before 5 A.M., started going over our budget, called up last year's electricity and water bills, and figured that, while we could comfortably pay $2,000/mo., $2,500 is a bit of a stretch. If we do that, we take a gamble: that the 32-year-old son with half a masters degree in math, who currently lives with us and whom we support, will find a tutoring/teaching job that will take him off the familial dole (mostly for repayment of student loans), or that we'll have at least enough in savings after the short sale (timing will be everything; the sooner the sale closes, the more we'll have)--or get enough of a tax refund, or find even more budgetary corners to cut, over and above the low-hanging fruit that comes just from selling the house and having a job--that the extra $500 won't stretch us too thin.
It's tough to leave paradise. This house fits us so well, even OJ's jury would have convicted us. Mrs. ShottleBop saw one house that looked interesting (at less than $2,000/mo.), near our granddaughter's school, and happened to catch a neighbor just arriving home. Neighbor told her that the neighborhood was great--friendly, long-time residents who all got along. So, what's wrong? The house has a beautiful bay window in the living room, but the FRONT DOOR opens into one side of the bay, so that you can't really put anything in that part of the space (see picture). (Mrs. ShottleBop is very visual, and has an intuitive sense of how a space flows, and things like that drive her nuts.) Cross that house off of the list!
Part of the issue is that, until the bank approves the sale, there's this irrational, "maybe the horse WILL learn how to talk," vibe that lets you hold off on making a decision, looking at more and more pictures on craigslist until your mind is numb. Getting the approval will mean that this is not just a bad dream, and that we'd better get our asses in gear and find a new place to live.

Re: What's up with you?
Naming! I love naming things!
I take it you will be having mostly nanny goats? I like theme names for groups of animals. I say, name them all for awesome women named Billie.
Billie Holiday, Billie Piper, Billie Jean King, etc. For identification and affection call them by their second names. You are going to have a herd so you can train them all to answer to, "Billie!" when called.
If you do get an actual male billy goat, call him William. But like a dignified historical William, like Shakespeare or The Conqueror or Wallace.
ALSO stock up on blue and red bandanas because I totally want to see these goats represent when you get them.

Re: What's up with you?
We will have two nanny goats, and use stud services if we decide to go that route. One of them is not available until next week, and her current people said they have a good billy goat if we be wanting milk and to instain babby. I think we should learn to take care of the goats before I start birthin' more.
Of course, any name suggestions will be run through Kiddo, who has full veto power. We might end up with goats named Ninja or Root Beer or something. His Bantums were ChewBokBok and Pork Chop (RIP), remember.

Re: What's up with you?
My mom is thinking it's a good idea to buy a duplex or triplex and move us all together. She likes living alone, but... she doesn't like to cook, and she's lonely. If we lived in a duplex, she could come over for dinner, and stuff, but have her own place to pace around in.
I have repeatedly invited her to live with us, but she doesn't want that. I can understand her fondness for independence, I want that for her too, but she doesn't think she can have it here in my house. So. I might be moving again far sooner than I thought.

Re: What's up with you?
I am all for the theme naming business. Back in the day when we kept goats we had, at one time, six kids out of two nannies. We named them: Enchilada, Taco, Chili, Burrito, Tamale and Tostada. They were adorable and quite tasty.

Re: What's up with you?
I saw Inherit the Wind on its closing night and it was fantastic! This is my first experience of it as a live show, though I've seen the movie with Spencer Tracy and Frederic March and the late 90's remake with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott.
The funny thing for me was that, though I'm a lifelong atheist, I was able to pick out all the hymn tunes they included during the course of the show, including "Shall We Gather at the River?", "There Is a Balm in Gilead", and "Revive Us Again". What's even funnier was that most of those songs had IWW versions, including the last one which is the source of the famous "Hallelujah, I'm a Bum".
Here's some clips from the show, which I also posted in the "What Are You Reading?" thread, and a video of the IWW song with the late, great Utah Phillips.

Re: What's up with you?
The Spencer Tracy/Frederich March version of Inherit the Wind is a great movie. People often find it hard to believe, but the look on Gene Kelly's face near the end when he's facing the camera and Spencer Tracy is calling him out is one of my favorite bits of acting ever. I just love that moment.
I saw it live at the Stratford Festival a few years back with William Hutt in the Tracy role and his nephew Peter Hutt in the Kelly role. It was a great production. Hutt did this wonderful bit of business with the radio reporter when the guy told him he couldn't swear on radio with his hand over the mic. He waited until the guy took his hand down, then leaned over right into the microphone when he said, "Why the hell not?" I do miss watching William Hutt act. He was a true genius.

Re: What's up with you?
I'm not quite sure this really happened because it seems so unlikely. Today I got an e-mail from the American Library Association saying they would like me to come to the Midwinter Conference as their guest and they had already paid my registration. They also want to introduce me at the first Council meeting.
I have been going to conferences on and off for over a decade, but have missed several because my library doesn't pay for me to go anymore. I never entered a contest or anything and I'm not particularly prominent, so I have no idea how this happened. I was already planning to attend, though, so I'm glad of the price break. Plus it seems like I have a better chance of getting the time off approved now that I've been honored like this.
Crazy, but very nice.
