Re: Miscellany
I was reading about Sequoyah, the guy who invented the Cherokee syllabary, the other day. He called white people's letters "talking leaves." When he finished the syllabary at first he encountered a lot of resistance from his tribespeople because they just didn't believe it was possible to capture the spoken word in written symbols. They thought the Anglos were just faking the whole writing/reading thing or doing some magic trick.

I never heard the word 'Darude' before just now, despite having heard that song a million times.

Re: Miscellany
I've been needing a haircut for a while, so today I went into town and tried a new barber that is right beside a laundromat because we had some large comforters to wash.
Have you ever had a really good haircut? The best haircut you've ever had by a country mile? A haircut so good you're never going anywhere else for a haircut ever again?
Did it also involve fire?
Today I had the best haircut of my life and for the first time in my hair cutting experience fire was involved.
The fire wasn't part of it being the best haircut ever, that was down to this Turkish man's expertise, commitment and attention to detail. Wonderful job and only £9, it was a steal.
Just as he was finishing up, he took out a small metal rod with a wad of cotton on the end, like a giant Q-tip. He dipped it in some liquid and lit it on fire
I was intrigued. What was he going to to do with it? Surely he wasn't going to shove that giant burning Q-tip into my ear... No, he just waved it all over and around my ears. Presumably to get rid of all my old-man ear hair. He then waved it around my head singeing stray bits of hair that I guess he missed when cutting. It was most strange.

Re: Miscellany
I had the same experience, and I thought it was pretty great: I now tend to go for turkish barbers, if they are available. Also because they often have delicious coffee with cardamon and a splash of rosewater.

Re: Miscellany
Yes. I too have had the Turkish fire-waving barber experience. Unfortunately, I've not been able to visit that barber often. Cos he was in Turkey.

Re: Miscellany
Singeing hair is an effective treatment for split ends as well. Woman pay a premium for that in high end salons. It's like dry cleaning all over again. Women pay big bucks for the same service men get on the cheap.
Note to self: find a Turkish barber.

Re: Miscellany
So there's this bar downtown. It may very well be awesome if you go by the photo I nabbed while sitting at a red light. I used the googles and found out it's called Sister Louisa's Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium. If we ever manage a largish meetup in ATL we're all totally gonna go here.

Re: Miscellany
The Oscars is on much too late here for me to bother watching it. Even if it was on at a more convenient time I doubt I could sit through the whole thing. But I was interested in how Chris Rock would handle the hosting given this year's controversy about the all white nominations. He pretty much hit it out of the park imo. Here is his opening monologue:
Also, if you can find it, the skirt where they insert black actors into some of the award winning movies was great. Tracy Morgan was fucking hilarious
