Every damn time I am in this thread I have to re-look up what 0 C is in F to get some sort of idea what y'all are talking about. It's the only temperature weather-wise that really matters, so you'd think I would remember.

I disagree. Temperature is an important aspect of the weather, but it is hardly the only thing that really matters. Humidity and wind speed also matter.

Here, the temperature is about 8 C, but the winds are a stiff 15-20 mph, gusting to 40 or so, and it is pouring horizontal rain in buckets (100% humidity). Ordinary, plain 8 C is a walk in the park with a hoodie. I defy you to be comfortable in THIS 8 C weather in merely a hoody. Ergo, I insist humidity and wind speed also matter.

It's 2 degrees C and raining here, after successive days of deep, heavy snow. I have so many unhappy trees right now. The evergreens all seem OK, but one of our trees just lost 2 major limbs, and crushed a smaller tree in the process. I had to move one of our cars because another tree is leaning a bit too much, and would fall if it leaned any more. (It's more upright now, because I shook some snow off.)

My cousin Pam, who lives in Redmond, WA, said it was snowing at sea level, which practically never haopens. Here in Kansas, it was 47°F and sunny today. Everything melted.

Read my mini-rant again. As Joe pointed out, I said it (0C, the freezing point) was the only temperature that actually matters when it comes to weather, NOT that only temperature matters. It was a not-very-veiled dig at the F scale, not a dig at windchill.


Also, I have never said that only temperature matters, that is something you have postulated I meant simply because I find weather forecasts focusing on the idea of windchill over real temperatures a blatant patronising lie.

Brutal commute today, unplowed sidewalks, huge piles of snow from where streets were plowed to climb over to the crosswalk. Snow is heavy with an ice crust on top - so you stand on it and then break through and submerge. I'm exhausted, not worth a button right now.

We've lived here for, I dunno, a decade or so. We've had p good winters with at least one big snowing storm every year. We had a nominal storm recently that required a little plowing. The Swedish astronomer, Anders Celsius, invented his scale with one hundred degrees between the freezing and boiling points of water in about 1730 - only a few years after Daniel Fahrenheit proposed his own scale. The stupid thing was, Celsius had it exactly backwards with one hundred degrees for freezing and zero degrees for boiling.

One year before Celsius's death, the Frenchman, Jean-Pierre Christin, proposed reversing the scale, and this was supported one year after Celsius's death by his countryman, Carl Linnaeus.

Celsius originally called his scale 'centigrade' - the Latin for 'hundred steps'. The name Celsius was only officially adopted by scientists in 1954, and we still called it centigrade (in the UK) when I was young - the BBC only changed over to using the 'new' name in February 1985.

There was tiny hail at the beach today.

Hailed like a sumbitch here last night, too. It stayed cold enough that it was all still there in the morning, although I was able to break it off the car windshield in huge, jagged chunks. Like watching a tiny glacier break apart.
