You know, it is awfully hard to stop in front of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg's palace when you're protesting in the US.

That shit in Oakland was horrendous, and here's Albany's answer:

Quote:
Across the country, mayors and police departments have started cracking down on Occupy protests.

In Atlanta, the mayor revoked an executive order allowing the protesters to stay on Tuesday afternoon. Just after midnight, police swept Woodruff Park, arresting the 50 peaceful protesters who stayed behind. [1] The same day, Occupy Orlando was kicked out of their park behind the Chamber of Commerce building. [2]

In Oakland, California, the situation was much worse: police raided and cleared the camp at Ogawa Plaza, arresting 75 people. They used tear gas, concussion grenades and batons to attack the peaceful crowd that came out to show solidarity that night. [3] One protester, a veteran who served two tours in Iraq, was struck in the head by a tear gas cannister, leaving him in critical condition.

But that's not what happened in Albany. Over the weekend, as Albany's Mayor was considering whether protestors should be cleared from their encampment, Albany County District Attorney David Soares announced he would not prosecute anyone arrested for nuisance violations while exercising their First Amendment rights at Occupy Albany.

Oakland's Mayor is showing what strong resolve and character she has by arriving at the protest's main stage last night, then chickening out and leaving. She later recorded a statement claiming her spot was canceled as if protests have a schedule of events. She also claims there will be 'investigations' into the use of violence by the cops.

As of a few days ago the camp at Oscar Grant plaza has started to grow again.
Friends who were there the night of the protest but left before the police started lobbing tear gas said a couple news teams and copters left as the police presence grew. Which explains why the next day many bay area news teams were giving police accounts and only changed their tune when forced by video on the web.

There are plans for a strike and protest in oakland on Nov 2.

Went to the Occupy Oakland protest today. Visited Oscar Grant Plaza which had multiple stages where people could talk, but also some booths and a growing tent city. Apparently bigger than when the police cleared it out. I then followed the constant flow of people to the ports to shut them down.
I was amazed at the diversity and inclusiveness of this protest. I saw a number of parents with kids of all ages, hipsters, hippies, trendsters and grandmas all walking as the 99%. I saw one group of "Grandma's for Occupy Oakland."

Edit to add,

Mainstream news has failed us. About the Oct 26th police raid,

Yep, it will be tweeted and Ustreamed. Currently watching a live ustream of Occupy Oakland protesters as it's the Alameda sheriffs department that takes a crack at lobbing teargas tonight.

As expected the news choppers left right before the police started showing force. Luckily technology can turn anyone into a reporter.

I'm listening to a Korean news show covering the OWS, concentrating on US, but with cameos from international participation. They present the phenomenon (I don't know, is that the wrong word?) in a generally favorable light.

Afterthought: Korean TV rocks, it's both informative and entertaining. Hey, can we get some Koreans over here to run our freakin' tele media, please?

Fifteen people were arrested at a sit-in against home foreclosures at a Bank of America branch in Massachusetts on Monday, while Tea Party supporters demonstrated across the street, organizers and police said.

Roughly 350 supporters of New England tenants and former homeowners complaining about foreclosures by large Wall Street banks were joined by protesters from anti-Wall Street “Occupy” movements at a Bank of America branch in downtown Springfield.

Seven protesters were cuffed and led away after sitting down inside the branch and refusing to leave, while eight others who blocked the bank’s entrances and cash machines were arrested, Springfield Police Lieutenant John Bobianski said.
