I played BoF 1/2/4 and yeah, definitely agreed on 4. Best of the series by far (the first two were especially grindy, like "drop what you're doing and grind 5+ levels or die immediately in the next dungeon" grindy, which they dropped a good bit by the time 4 rolled around).

Never did play the 3rd one though.

Speaking of old grindy RPGs, if you're a real masochist go try the 7th Saga. I'm still not sure what possessed me to bother with that game for as long as I did (I beat it with 3 of the characters, I guess my teenage life wasn't good enough or something... that and my friends all bitched about how hard it was)

Also, the first two Shin Megami Tensei games for the SNES have fan translations now. The second one is pretty awesome. Just prepare yourself to utterly loathe Kether Castle.

Here's a question for you, Megatron. Square Enix has a Nintendo 3DS game coming out in Japan called Bravely Default, Flying Fairy. What do you think of the game? It kind of gives me a bit of a Final Fantasy IX vibe a bit. I do hope it comes out here as I think the game looks good.

Have you played any of the Tales games?

What a Japanese name for a game. Jesus.

It sounds like word salad in English.

It essentially is. If it gets localized, I hope they go with a more comprehensible name.

It looks awful but I haven't seen anything that looks particularly good for the 3DS yet (note: I don't have one and probably won't buy one)

There really isn't enough in screenshots to tell if it'll be good, but it's hard to expect much from Square Enix anymore. The only good work I've seen them do in like a decade now has been Dragon Quest and FF4 remakes. (Note: the GBA re-port of FF4 still sucks, don't bother)

As for the Tales games, I played a translated rom of the first one for the SNES - I think it was called Phantasia. I didn't finish it. Never bothered with the series after that because the combat systems of Tales/Star Ocean 3/PSU/etc rather annoy me. I'd seriously take turn based any day over having multiple characters and only being able to control one at a time.

Watching a friend play Tales of Graces f only confirmed for me just how bad even modern console AI is at not being pants-on-head retarded with those characters you're not actively controlling. The game still looked really cool, though. If I ever see it laying around for 20 bucks I might pick it up just because.

I came across a code for EA's Origin service for a free game that's priced under $20 so I decided to see if Dragon Age 2 was as bad as everyone said. It was. The leveling system has been tampered with and you can't even control the armor/weapons on your party members. Mages are much less powerful and more vulnerable to attack. The cameos from characters in Dragon Age:Origins verges on downright stupid. The map isn't as versatile, you find yourself going through the same few places quest after quest, it gets old. Crafting sucks, runes are pointless, and the story sucks.

I want them to make another Dragon Age to atone for this perversion.

I believed you but it was either that or a Sims expansion pack.

Not necessarily recommend, but this is interesting.

BTW, Bravely Default, Bravely Second, and Bravely Default II were all pretty solid games. Bravely Default did a number of things I particularly admired, not least of which were that there's two translations of the game's subtitle both of which eventually become spoilers.
