Default Things never to eat

Today's entry: office brownies.

10 employees fall sick after eating possible 'drugged' brownies at a Westlake hospice center - News 5 Cleveland
Quote:
On Friday, police were called to the Ames Family Hospice House, 30080 Hospice Way, after employees ate possibly "drugged" brownies that were provided to the staff by another employee.

Police said two employees sought treatment at the hospital for symptoms of dizziness and paranoia.

Investigators learned a housekeeping employee brought a tray of brownies to the facility a day before employees reported feeling sick.
Dizziness and paranoia are normal behaviors at my office so I dunno how we'd know it was the brownies.

Caesar salad.

This is naught but the latest variation on the alfalfa sprouts issue....

In short, I suspect we should all stop eating all leafy greens. Too much E.coli.

Brownie baking tip! Always use different shaped cuts or molds for 'poisonous' brownie and non poisonous brownie. Doing cupcake/muffin style molds for leaded brownies can not only dose them out but give them an obvious shape

Brownie eating tip!
Ask! Once I was at a holiday party helping someone hand out leaded brownie bites and someone wandered down the hall, popped one off the plate and ate almost the entire thing in one stride down the hall before anyone could say anything. One of us had to catch up and mention to her the sudden addition she had put on herself, so if that wasn't what she was expecting, she had a little bit of time to prep before enjoying the lead.
Back in the olden days when more people made brownies from shake, there was an obvious taste but with modern oils much more readily available, something with some punch might have a flowery taste or no taste difference at all.

If you're really worried then in some cases yes. Any pre cut lettuce bagged produce is out. Once ripped the edges provide a good enough hiding spot to keep things sticking even if you rinse it again. Lettuce should be separated into leaves, heavily washed (some might even say with a mild veggie soap), patted dry and then cut up for being served, same with many veggies that should get a good little scrub under water even if they look clean.
E.Coli is probably coming from the waste water the lettuce is grown with and for some reason some of the more serious strains can catch a ride on the lettuce. Last I read there's a small bit of evidence that this rigorous cleaning won't be effective and somehow the source super bacteria is lasting inside the lettuce, but also a much bigger amount of evidence that because of the low bacteria count needed to get people sick, even tiny amounts left on precut lettuce can replicate to be infectious by the time the cut and bagged lettuce makes it to the table.

Amusingly a large number of E.Coli species live just fine with us, both around us and in us, and yet there are a few that are so vicious they breed and attack in epidemic proportion if given the chance. Which is another factor, there's some findings that contamination by cow can spread the dangerous version of e.coli and so a portion of what you do at home with lettuce may not matter nearly as much as if it was farmed near dairy cows or with grey water from cow waste.

I'm not worried.

Caesar salad is a rarity at my place. I can live without.

I understand that anthrax is largely everywhere, as well.

Just when I decided to go on a diet - I can't eat lettuce. Guess I will stick with pie.

Yeah, that was my rationale for the clam chowder soup today.

It's certainly fine, specifically because it's cooked. Cooking does amazing work at killing bacteria and fungi even at seemingly lower temps. If we ate something cooked with romaine it all wouldn't be nearly the problem. Which is why I cringe at the 'raw food' diet fad that people around here like to do when being vegan is just too mainstream that only eat uncooked foods, because cooking allows you to be oh so much more careless about things without it being a problem as long as everythings going to get fried or boiled or baked eventually. But if you're going to eat it raw, a lot more care needs to be taken. There is after all a good reason why many old school staples include baths of acids, multiple hours of boiling, baking in hot ovens etc.

There's some irony that a large number of vegitarian food items will survive poor refrigeration without any issue but you throw in cold leafy greens and suddenly that same veggie diet becomes potentially the most stomach sickness prone.

Disappointing, since Jazzlover has included links in all their other posts so far.

Take one wheel of pecorino, remove part of rind and allow a particular type of fly to lay eggs on it. After the maggots do their thing (pictured above), enjoy!

But watch out for hopping maggots, they will try to escape while you're eating it. If you prefer, soon before serving, you can put it in a sealed container and wait until the maggots suffocate (they will leave the cheese in search of oxygen, so the cheese will now be maggot-free). But the maggots should still be alive before preparing to serve it, the cheese will be spoiled if it's infested with dead maggots :gross:
