The first three tracks have little to no merit but WfC itself is good, if not quite in the same vein as his other stuff.

I (finally) watched "Stop Making Sense" this weekend. I've always enjoyed Talking Heads, but never really delved into their music too deeply. This is about to change, especially today, when I'm at work with minimal interruptions.

Oh, and am I weird for really liking the Tom Tom Club song that was used to allow a costume change for David Byrne?

You mean Genius of Love? That song is outstanding! Word around the campfire is that it originally featured a three minute Adrian Belew guitar solo that ended up on the cutting room floor, but it's a damn fine song just the same.

Hell, that whole album is great. Genius, Wordy Rappinghood, As Above So Below, On and On ... I played that album to death.

If liking Genius of Love is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

This remains one of the all-time great concert tunes. Check out the almost Buddy Rich-like solo from a drummer who looks like he's about 8 years old and uses one of the most bare-bones drum kits you'll ever see.

In the past week I've binged on live music. My eardrums survived.

On Sunday:

Conjurer: described here as sludge/doom/post-metal. In your face and in your gut drumming which made for a great opener, but three guitars and I couldn't make any of them out. Undecided.

Insomnium: awesome. Melodic death metal at its Finnish coldest.

Wednesday:

Wolves in the Throne Room: another support act I hadn't heard of, but these guys have been around for a while. Described (not at that link) as "atmospheric black metal" (with some doom and goth tendencies to my ear). From your Pacific northwest. Lots of intros and outros with complex percussion and sampled/synthesised soundscapes. Appealed to the prog rocker in me.

Amorphis: even more awesome. More Finnish melodic death metal, and finally a fucking keyboard player.

And Dimmu Borgir: Norwegian black metal, complete with corpse paint, hoods, even more of a light show than the other guys, even more smoke, and even more loud.
I don't know their music well enough to pick a track, but promises lived up to.

Getting hyped for March. They're touring an album released last fall, but they're still playing this one dating back to 2005.

I've been to hundreds of concerts over the decades, and that was easily in the top ten, maybe the top five. Opeth is five first-rate musicians who've been working together a long time, playing music written by a bona fide songwriting god. On top of everything else, the light show was amazing.

Here's a crappy cellphone vid featuring Mikael Akerfeldt's always-entertaining band intros and the last song of the night:

Pea! Yes, yes!

Just the bass line to this tune is like song all by itself...always been a sucker for a double sax solo too.
