Another f’in new guy

One of my usual forums is down today for the blackout so I thought I’d check ya’ll out. I’m an about to be 50 year old white guy from Alabama. Served in the military. Spent a good part of my adult life working comms as a NASA contractor. Currently work as a small business consultant. About to start back to school to study biology. Obliviously I don’t know what I want to do when I grow up. Divorced, currently unattached, dogs and no kids. Agnostic about the god of the deist. Atheist on the gods of the theist.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes I’m in Huntsville. I’m also glad to see I’m not the only one here owned by greyhounds. Yes the hound in my avatar is one of mine. He’s Holland Popeye. AKA Pops, Big Guy, Handsome Boy and Oh my god what is that smell? I am Popeye’s Pappy.

I think I've posted some before... we've had him for about 4 years now and he's lovely. He's so quiet and calm and... LAZY

Pops will be 12 in July. He was a special needs hound in that he came off the track with a broken hock. It has really been giving him problems lately, but he seems happy enough despite the pain.

My dogs try to be your dogs, and chase down rabbits. They are molossers though, so catching one is a massive pipedream, and regularly ends up as a contest of dog VS ground in stead of dog VS medium-sized rodent. I am a Dutchman living in Ireland, where owning greyhounds is sort of a religion. One of those really nasty primitive ones.

Hello PopeyesPappy, welcome to the nuthouse. My neighbors are involved in the save the greyhound program, they have 3, and they have another dog that is teaching the greyhounds to bark and 'sing'. I've outgrown having dogs as pets, or any animal as a pet.

My son has an electronic fence for his Akita, and it seems to work OK.

Our adoption group doesn’t recommend the electronic fences for greyhounds for a couple of reasons. First is if the hound is running towards the fence at speed it is going to find itself on the outside before it can get stopped. Now it can't get back in even if it wants to. Second is even if the electronic fence works to keep your dog in it does nothing to keep other things out.

I understand that, but once the dog learns the 'fence' it will not run towards the fence except under extreme circumstances. A friend of mine had an electronic fence for his dog, and the dog did just that, ran full speed over the fence. And to get the dog back his wife took the collar off, let the dog back, and was carrying the collar in her hand when she came back to the fence. The results of the wife trying to carry the collar back in her hand were not plesant but probably very entertaining to everyone else.
