Bitcoin is an experiment in a fiat money system without a central government or bank regulator.
What's especially weird about it is that it is, technically, a fiat currency, but one that was specifically designed to avoid what some (lolbertarians, mostly) consider undesirable about fiat currency: new bitcoins can't be created in arbitrary amounts to meet the needs of an economy, but have to be "mined" by cryptographic means. That, coupled with the predetermined limit to the number of bitcoins that can ever exist, makes it an extremely deflationary currency, by design.
And, sure, you can buy a house with it, provided you can find someone willing to sell you a house for bitcoins (and can come up with enough money in an actual legal tender to pay the various taxes and fees involved in real estate transactions). You can also buy a house with bottle caps, provided you can find someone willing to sell you a house for bottle caps.

The problem with any currency is what you can actually exchange for it, and in bitcoins case there are a few bitcoin to $ ATMs as well as a growing market but it's all still mostly grey/black. It's ultimately easier to put $ into bitcoin than to take it out.
Silk Road was mostly known for drugs but was an open marketplace so anything could be bought and sold, like a bitcoin ebay. Of course you still had to trust the seller, and in the case of murder for hire, a bogus-plant was how the organizer of Silk road was taken down, so it's really questionable how many assassins actually take bitcoins.
Personally I see bitcoin as more of a test/experiment, too unstable for a real currency but not bad for a first try.

Admittedly, this source is dated, and pre-dates MSNBC, which is definitely slanted to heavily favor national Democratic Party politics (In other words, center Right political views), even more than Fox has been slanted to favor Republican Party politics, at least recently.
