Default Question: which is better?

When you work in a large company, they have things like employee art exhibits.

I am serious thinking about submitting an idea I had. I replaced the keyboard on my old MacBook and now I have a bunch of tiny screws in a watch glass.
Like most normal people, I wondered, "What do they look like under the microscope?"

I kind of like this picture idea, because I can spin its interpretation in both ironic and non-ironic ways. The problem I'm having now is an aesthetic question. This is a focus stack, and I can either choose to maximize the focus, or I can select parts to be out of focus. I chose to do it two ways, and I'm a bit torn as to which one like better. Your opinion matters to me, so time for a poll:

1.

or 2.

Submissions are due Monday. I'll probably make a decision by tomorrow afternoon.

I like #1 the best, but considering the aesthetic sensibilities of the "modern Instagram youths of today," I might go with a more gradient version of #2. So pretty much like #2, except that the blurring decreases gradually by thread, bottom to top.

The more I look at it, though, the more I like #1.

What would it look like in grayscale?

The one that's all in focus is way better. No doubt about it. Not even close. Anyone who says different is trying to trick you into making a bad exhibit.

Selective or soft focus is good for pointing to what you want to highlight, hiding bits you don't like or providing more information or feeling to an image. Like for example if there was an extremely long screw you could help to emphasize the length by having it fad off into the distance.

#1 is certainly better, not only that but part of what I find so interesting is that there looks like a tiny line and mismatched grit marks on the side of the head that's out of focus in the second one. IMO part of the interest is the fine detailed textures on things we often think of as smooth objects.

#1 is best. The thing that grabs my attention in these photos is the surface textures - and #2 frustrates by hiding some of those textures.

The selectively blurred one is better. Everyone else on this thread is wrong.

...and my family wound up agreeing with you all as well. Submitted the first one with most of the picture in focus.

I also said I'd make is available as a physical item as well, which was pretty bold considering I just took the picture on Wednesday. I'm debating if I should get a print before I hear if it's been accepted.

So the one I submitted (#1) got accepted - as part of the online gallery. I will soon hear if I need to actually create a print.
