Italian cruise ship captain resisted orders to reboard - World - CBC News

De Falco berates the captain, who is in a lifeboat and repeatedly saying he doesn't want to return to the ship, even as passengers are still being evacuated from it.

"You go on board and then you will tell me how many people there are," De Falco shouted in the audiotape. "Is that clear?"

Schettino resisted, saying the ship was tipping and that it was dark. At the time, he said he was co-ordinating the rescue from the lifeboat.

De Falco shouted back: "And so what? You want to go home, Schettino? It is dark and you want to go home? Get on that prow of the boat using the pilot ladder and tell me what can be done, how many people there are and what their needs are. Now!"

One of these Captains is not like the other.

Well I don't feel sorry for Ex-captain Schettino, hopefully he'll get what he deserves. It would be a good bet he won't be Captain of ship again. The responsabilities of a ship Captain are well defined, and have been for a long time.

"This was a banal accident in which fatalities were caused by human interactions. I think there was a misunderstanding from the start," [Schettino] said in an interview in his home in which he appeared twitchy and dishevelled.

"That distance as is routine should have been reported because whoever is seeing excessive proximity on the radar should signal it," he said.

He also defended his decision to delay evacuation of the ship for 45 minutes, saying it would have been "stupid" to abandon the vessel earlier as it was moving closer to the shore making it easier for lifeboats.

"Being at a lower depth definitely meant fewer victims," he said.

Schettino said he was "a victim of this whole system" and did not "feel like I committed a crime" but added: "It is normal that I ask for forgiveness from everyone and feel the weight of the 32 victims on my conscience."

I do not think this guy should never be allowed to have other folks lives in his hands, not even driving a cab, but gosh, I cannot blame the guy for trying to save his own skin. No person knows how he/she will react in such a situation until presented with one.


Bad, indefensible as a captain. Not so rare as a human. We have put our entire country in the hands of men who showed no better credentials as human beings.

At least schettino was ignorant about his cowardice until the event. I remember a president who took the job knowing his character had that particular flaw. And one right before him who might have.

Apparently, Schettino is suing the cruise line for wrongful termination. Seems "his deft steering saved lives and that the reef the ship hit wasn't on his charts." He will "certainly" captain a ship again someday!

The wheels of Eye-talian justice turn in their own sweet time. Francesco Schettino's trial has been under way off and on since July 2013. On Monday prosecutors made what appears to be the Italian equivalent of what us 'merkins call a closing argument, asking the court to impose a 26-year prison sentence.

According to this article, the same court will assign civil liability and assess damages as well. Multiple claimants, including the Italian government, inhabitants of the island where the wreck happened and Costa Concordia passengers are seeking multiple fucktons of Euros from the cruise line. A ruling's expected in February.

He got 16 years. He won't be being bars anytime soon, though, since Italy has automatic appeals. He was a shitweasel until the end, throwing his helsman, who unlike him did not "trip" into a lifeboat, under the bus.

A recent NOVA episode covered the raising of the Costa Concordia hulk and Jesus Christ what a fucking unbelievable feat of engineering. My jaw was dropped the whole time. It's a must-see.

So now it was the helmsman's fault, whereas two years ago it was Schettino's own "deft steering" that saved lives. Looks like we can look forward to a great deal more shitweaseling in the future.
