Re: World Cup 2006
I've never been a big soccer fan, but I must say I'm excited about this year.

Not at all. Those seem like sensible picks (if a bit daring in the final rounds!).

Re: World Cup 2006
Four years ago, I watched all the Ireland matches down the local pub, at hours varying from 1am through 05:30 kickoff. Sadly, there is no Irish contingent this year (Boo, hiss), so I really don't know if I could be bothered.
Anyone see the International Car Football match on Top Gear this week?

Iran admits first round elimination
If Iran's World Cup team advances out of the first round, the nation's controversial president might be on hand for the rest of its games. ***
"There are no plans for the president to visit," ambassador Mohammed Mehdi Akhondzadeh said. Iran's only World Cup victory came in 1998 against the U.S.

Nobody likes Croatia to come out of Group F? Granted there some competition there for 2nd place with Japan and Australia, but I think the Croats could be the sleepers.
ETA: I see BDS gave a nod to Croatia.

I like the Spain-Korea matchup on your scenario. With a Spanish victory the supernaturally awful officiating that gave Korea the win in 2002 (hmm... anyone recall where that one was played?) might lose some of its sting. Though little can be done at this point to reduce the feeling that soccer is as fixed for the hometown favourite as, say, boxing.

The Croats are probably slight favourites to get second place, and if I wasn't Australian I would have picked them.

It's a rhetorical question, I know, but the game was played in Gwangju in Korea. I saw the game on the big screen in Seoul in amongst 10000's of very excited Korean fans. Quite an experience, let me tell you.

Bah, I came in here to post that I still hope he's not pushing it by playing too soon. I'd hate to see him re-injured.
Not sure whether the media's playing this up a bit or not, but Gerrard might miss the first match. It sounds like a recurring issue with him, too.

Re: World Cup 2006
Oh dear! I didn't know that about Gerrard.
I wonder about Rooney too. He's so young still and it would be awful if he re-injured himself due to either not actually being healed properly or because he's not really match fit.

Re: World Cup 2006
I think he and Eriksson are jumping the gun, honestly. But then again, would Ferguson let him play if there were a decent chance that he wasn't fit?
At least Crouch will get another chance to do the robot dance.

I was going to mention Ferguson in my previous post. I read the other day that Sven was prepared to go to the FA or FIFA if Ferguson tried to stop Rooney being part of the England team. So, I don't know that he'll have much choice to be honest.

There was a great quote on Sky Sports the other night about it; they interviewed Crouch, and naturally brought that up. He said something along the lines of he didn't think about the millions of people watching him do that until afterwards, and was quite embarrassed.
There are already videos floating around on Youtube with every freakin chav in the nation doing that dance. It's worse than the frog ringtone thingy.

Re: World Cup 2006
Injuries continue to mount.
Ballack is set to miss the opener (and he's Germany's best player).
Italy and the Czechs both seem to have injury woes -- Nedved is hurt, Smicer is out, Nesta, Gattusso, and Zambrotta are all battling fitness worries. This bodes well for the U.S., although Italy's depth means that the drop-off is not great. The U.S., meanwhile, is healthy (although we can assume that Claudio Reyna will get injured withing 10 or 15 minutes of taking the pitch, like he always does.).

Fortunately for Germany, the opener is against the weakest team in the group, Costa Rica. Costa Rica qualified 3rd through Concacaf and Germany have never lost a competitive match against a Concacaf nation. Still, opening games are tricky and Germany will have to have their minds on the job.

Re: World Cup 2006
OK, question. Is there anywhere on the internet to stream the games? I know BBC is doing it, but I can't find a link.

Re: World Cup 2006
I have a proposal:
1) No mention of same-day results in post headers.
2) Same-day results hidden by "spoiler" signs.
I post from work, and I'm planning on taping games (which are during the day here in the West Coast of the U.S.) and watching them when I get home. It's a lot more fun to watch if you don't know the result.

Re: World Cup 2006
Ooh! Blimey, BDS. I totally understand but if England are winning, I'll have to put the whole post under spoiler tags, so I don't give it away with dancing smilies.
Actually, I'll put ALL live game posts under spoilers - disappointments and all.

Re: World Cup 2006
Good idea, BDS. I forgot to set my VCR for the matches today. We're planning to go down to the pub tomorrow for the england match. Is 9 in the morning too early to be drunkenly rowdy?
