This just keeps getting worse and worse. If I had a daughter I think that I might be considering moving to another country.

Ohio Abortion Bill Contains Unprecedented Restrictions

Quote:
The Ohio House of Representatives is considering an anti-abortion omnibus bill that would force doctors to tell their patients how much personal income they would lose if they did not perform abortions.

The bill also makes ultrasounds mandatory for any woman seeking an abortion, requires doctors to give women medically disputed information about pain felt by fetuses and mention the debunked link between abortion and breast cancer, lengthens the mandatory waiting period before an abortion, and threatens physicians with a felony and an unprecedented fine of up to $1 million if they fail to comply with the laws.

Do you guys really insult women using dickhead, prick, motherfucker, etc? Those are almost exclusively for men in my experience. Women are bitches, cunts, whores. Men do call other men female things to insult them by implying they are female..."Quit being a girl", "Shut up bitch" and that sort. But I rarely hear women insult other women by calling them pricks or fuckwads....that's what makes it funny to me.

I don't. I make a conscious effort to use "asshole" to insult both men and women, to avoid "bitch" and such (although I call men "bitch" sometimes, preferably with a nellie lilt to it) -- but it remains a conscious effort, because "asshole" feels male-specific in my head.

Pretty much all of my insult flinging is in traffic where I may not know the gender of the offending party. Most of the words used are just strings of components from other insults: jackhole, assbag, asswad. I've grown fond of douchenozzle lately. The old stanards of motherfucker, asshole, jerkoff and dickhead are useful as well.

I usually think of dick as being associated with thoughtless, selfish behavior - "don't be a dick." In my my mind, it's disassociated with the male organ. I sometimes use the word 'choad' but mostly because of the way it sounds.

I sometimes find myself using the word 'bitch' but try to challenge myself when it happens. Pussy and cunt don't have any appeal to me and I don't find myself using them, for the most part.

How about men? We too are abused. Just look at what the Family Court does to men. They are left bankrupt and childless after a divorce, only to be ATM's and sperm donors and watch their children grow up from a distance.

I am so sick of reading article EVERY day about how women are such victims.

:highfive:

I am always pleased when I remember to call someone a choad in the heat of the moment. It is my favorite, but it doesn't usually come to mind readily for some reason.

I've always used asshole as gender neutral. Not consciously or anything, though. I really thought it was, and didn't realize anyone thought different until people commented on it.

The thing that bothers me about bitch is that there's a good chance that it's for some behavior that it's some kind of double standard. Either used against a woman for some behavior that wouldn't be considered as bad if a man did it, or as a regular old :ladyburn: when used on a man.

I don't think that genital based insults are always gendered. Just usually.

Like when I call someone a dick or one of its cognates or derivatives or whatever, I am misandering them on purpose. I explicitly mean, "You are dull, childish, and petty, like a man."

I do. Well, I don't remember the last time I said "dickhead", but you know.

To me, asshole/dick/various synonyms for "penis" are blanket terms for anyone, male or female, who is...well, being a dick. Putting themselves conspicuously first and disregarding the needs of those around them, through arrogance or rudeness or aggression or whatever.

"Bitch" to me primarily means someone, male or female, who is obnoxiously whiny or full of complaints (i.e. someone who bitches a lot). As I think I've mentioned before, the most common scenario where I use "bitch" as a noun involves someone who is holding up a game by arguing with a referee. I usually avoid applying to women out loud, though, as I'm aware that it also frequently means a woman who being assertive in an unacceptably manly fashion.

I think the two terms (or term categories, I guess, in the case of the synonyms for penis) have pretty obvious gendered derivations (getting carried away with asserting one's own agency versus failing to passively accept an outcome), but in my mind the former are pretty gender neutral, and the only sense in which I'm comfortable using the latter is as well.

I try sometimes to use wuss instead of pussy, but apparently wuss comes from wussy which comes from pussy-wussy which comes from pussy. So wuss is kind of like a minced oath for pussy.

But I didn't know that before, so whatevs.

What Happened When I Started a Feminist Society at School

As I learned on my vacation and keep getting reminded of since, Republicans trying to legislate away reproductive rights notwithstanding, gender issues are actually way worse in Britain than in the States.

It sounds very similar to me, in the online comments and social media as vehicle of attack sense. And the rape culture sense. What aspects do you see as worse across the pond?

That reminds me of a recent video I saw online. They played a word association game with different Brits on the street. The responses were hopeful in places and heart breaking in others, especially divided between the young and old. It also kinda dovetails nicely with the discussion on gendered insults.

First off I don't imagine they would have that much trouble starting a Feminist Club at an all girls school here. But the pressure to stay in prescribed gender roles seems much stronger over there. Maybe the things I read on Everyday Sexism are happening as much over here as over there, but I don't see them that often and my niece said she doesn't get treated that way over here, nowhere near it.

I was more going by the abuse via comments and tweets and online discussions that we read about every day here. The abuse with social networks is especially egregious with young people; rape victims being harassed and threatened and such.

In person aggression may be worse there. I didn't see or experience anything like that on my visit in 2004...but of course that was an extremely limited observation.

I was thinking about that while I was driving home, Shea and I think there might be a reason we see things differently. Earlier today I had a conversation with a friend about the Paula Deen deposition. The racism in that got most of the press but if you read the complaint you see the sexism is unbelievably bad. One of the incidents was that the general manager stopped paying the woman bonuses after she got divorced, because he said divorce is a sin. My friend said she had read somewhere that divorce still carries a huge stigma for women in the South, no matter what their position in society or the circumstances of their marriage.

Putting those two together made me thing maybe you don't see the difference between Britain and America because maybe it's not as pronounced where you live. Perhaps it's not better in America per se, but better in Flint and Detroit. I must recognize that I work in a predominantly female profession, despite the occasional creepiness from patrons. That insulates me from some of the worst of that behavior. Heck, we probably experience significantly less street heckling in Michigan for the simple fact that we are such an entrenched car culture that women aren't walking or taking public transit enough to be exposed to it.

Or even that there is a problem.

I am reminded of something my father used to say, jokingly, when one of us kids would skin a knee or something and start crying. He would say "Why are you crying?" We would, of course, reply that it hurt and he would say "I don't feel a thing". I always understood that it was meant as a joke and I took it accordingly, but it does suggest an attitude of "If it's not bothering me, then it must not be a problem".
