Give a good statistician the raw data, and he will prove anything you want.

Likewise, give a researcher an agenda, and he will prove it.

That is nothing - I have already found 176 studies that look into the addictive model for compulsive eating. Apparently there is even one that shows similarities between people over-eating and people using heroin.

Does that mean that McDonalds is an evil empire and that we should ban it or at least regulate access?

Hang on wait, I am actually struggling to see a downside there. Let me rephrase.

Should we censor what people are allowed to eat because problematic eating and drug use seem to share a similar mechanism according to a mounting number of studies? Does the potential similarity between drug use and compulsive eating mean that food is as addictive and harmful as heroin? Should we start worrying about the fact that addictive, potentially harmful material is lurking in every fridge, cheaply available, and that kids can access it? If we put restrictive laws in place that regulate what we can eat, are we "erring on the side of caution" because we choose to see the ugliness of the system or whatever?

So far all I see evidence for is that A) cheap and readily available neuro-imaging data is making this kind of research popular and B) Normal and even necessary behavior can be problematic if taken to excess, and examining them as an addiction model may lead to useful advances in treatment methods.
