I really enjoyed "The Black Phone" - it's been on my list for a while.

Ethan Hawke is "The Grabber" - a man taking middle school boys. He grabs Finney, who is a little bit different. The room Finney's being kept in has an unconnected black phone that starts ringing for him, and he can talk to The Grabber's previous victims. Their stories are enough to give Finney a bit of an advantage and hopefully survive his captivity.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree for Joe Hill (the nom de plume of Stephen King's son). The movie is set in the author's childhood, and there's more kid-on-kid violence and bullying than from the main antagonist. Still, I enjoyed how Finney navigates his captivity - I like a good MacGyver scenario.

We saw Tar last week. Cate Blanchett plays a famous composer/conductor working on a bunch of things, including a new live recording, when things start going downhill, but I don't like spoilers. It's very good, though. What they call Oscar bait.

Also last week I saw Triangle of Sadness, which was great. It's a comedy-parable sort of thing about fancy people vacationing on a fancy luxury yacht. There are some very gross scenes, but they were funny enough to justify the grossness. Spoiler: It is about capitalism and social class, you guys. I could tell.

The Decline of Western Civilization (1981)

A warts and all document of the LA punk scene 1979-80.

I have never seen this before. When I first discovered punk, this was already more legendary than real - most of these bands didn't exist in the same form, if they even were still around. I was not into the LA punk scene in general, so I was never inspired to track this down. However, the box set was on sale at SHOUT! Factory a while back, so I picked it up. I got around to watching it last night.

Watching this in 2023 more than 40 years (!!!) after this was released, as a middle aged father with adult children, some of this feels a lot different than it might had I watched this as a teen. The warts are more apparent. The drug abuse is saddening. I knew right from the start that Darby Crash, the singer for The Germs probably wouldn't make it out of the 80s - I only learned afterwards he didn't even make it to the release of the film. Half of these kids would be incels today - lots of misogyny and homophobia to go with all the inchoate rage.

Still, it's a pretty amazing capture of a punk scene few people would have known about otherwise.

‘Dune: Part Two’ release postponed to 2024 as actors strike lingers

OK, That's IT!

I'm going to have to go walk those picket lines.

I do like zombie movies in general, and I really enjoyed The Girl with All the Gifts.

If you only watch one zombie movie starring Glenn Close, make it this one :)

Plex sent me a "Recommended for you" email ad and I got sucked into An Honest Liar (2014). It was a convenient excuse to keep resting while being sick. It's a pretty fair document of Randi's life, especially with the turn - Randi had only been "out" for a few years and (I think) was in the process of making this documentary when his partner was arrested for identity theft. This is the final act of the film, and it's revealed that Randi was basically complicit in this, in that he knew that the "Jose Alvarez" was not his real identity, but believed that Devyi was risking his life if he were forced to go back to his home country.

Since the movie was over 7 years ago, I was curious about his current status - He's still residing in the US. I found an interview he gave in 2021:

In Conversation with Jose Alvarez | Norton Museum of Art

"We Have a Ghost" on Netflx. Grandchild (23) and I were looking for a comedy. This is probably better classed as a dramedy, but it was surprisingly well-done and touching. Good acting. Good use of music. Would watch again.

Squaring the Circle, which I just saw on Netflix, a documentary on Hipgnosis, a company primarily known for album cover art. You'll see interviews with Peter Gabriel, all surviving members of Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Paul McCartney, Graham Gouldman, Po Powell (the surviving founder of Hipgnosis) and surely some others I can't recall off the top of my head.

Things I should have known but didn't: the cover for the Pink Floyd album Wish You Were Here, with the two men in suits shaking hands and one guy on fire, featured an actual stunt man on actual fire. They did many takes in search of the "perfect" shot until the wind shifted and caused the flames to envelop the stunt man's face, after which the stunt man announced that the shoot was complete.

The Killer (2023)

David Fincher's latest for Netflix. Michael Fassbender is a many-named professional assassin. The movie opens with a long internal monologue about how he manages to perform in this job so well. Then he fucks it up. He bails and heads home, only to discover that two other killers came to tie up loose ends. They left when their plans were foiled by his girlfriend, who they injure. The killer then goes on his own "tying up loose ends" spree. Is it revenge, or just making sure he's not the target again? He doesn't seem to really know or want admit it to himself.

I enjoyed this a lot, it's both exciting and funny, with a very black sense of humor.

Israelism

Banned all over America, this new documentary made by and "starring" current and former Zionists about the many ways in which American Jews are indoctrinated with the belief that support for Israel, and specifically the Israeli military, is the greatest good.

Okay yeah, that was hyperbole. But there have been several attempts to get screenings of it cancelled on campuses for "antisemitism".

"What We Did On Our Holiday", on Freevee. British film with David Tennant, Rosamond Pike, Ben Miller, Amelia Bullmore, Bill Connolly, and more. Divorcing David Tennant and Rosamund Pike drive from London to Scotland with their three kids to celebrate his 75th birthday. Because his father has cancer and isn't expected to live another year, Tennant and Pike are trying to keep their impending divorce secret.

My grandchild and I enjoyed it very much.

Dune Part 2 is as good if not better than the first part.

Mrs. Reasons thought it was good up until the end, and then she thought it was a downer ending. I said, "I think Dune books always end as bit of a bummer."

I wondered about that ending, too. It leaves room for the story to evolve beyond the first book. I waited almost sixty years for them to get that one right.
I am not sure I can wait that long for the second book.

I know that it's been around a while.
I just watched Ex Machina last night.

Fascinating. There was a lot of mental "Sleight of Hand" going on, there.

I reckon she passed the Turing Test, yeah?
