Bridges here in Oregon are in similar states of disrepair as those reported in the article Dingfod referenced.

Too bad we're wasting so much money on "rebuilding" Iraq. We could use some federal revenues to update our aging interstate infrastructure.

Oh...wait...we gave that money back to the rich in tax breaks.

Nevermind.

Yeah, a half-trillion dollars would go a long way toward fixing up our aging infrastructure.

Everything always refers to the military budget...

BBC now reporting seven. Anyone know if the rail line underneath is ever used by Amtrak or local commuter runs? I think a top end of seven is fortunately low.

It's like the Empire State Building or a Blue Whale, it's freaking huge, that's why it gets used for comparison purposes.

It still says 7 afaics. I saw another article that said 9 fatalities but I don't have it open any more.

The train crushed was a freight train.

This is really sad. :(

The news today is saying that there are only 4 confirmed deaths so far, but they are certain that there are more people trapped in their cars at the bottom of the river, under large chunks of bridge.

Oh dear. I just saw this on the BBC website.

It's still saying 4 confirmed dead with up to 30 people missing. :(

Wikinews says
Quote:
Reports say that at least nine people have died but Minneapolis police said during a 7:30 a.m. (local time) press conference that only four are confirmed dead. Tim Dolan, the Minneapolis Police Chief later stated that "several [adding to the four] people are confirmed dead at the scene," but would not elaborate on how many. At least 79 have been injured and at least 30 are missing, still believed to be in the rubble.
Uh-oh... I'm thinking someone's going to be in trouble
Quote:
the bridge was last inspected in 2006 and no significant structural problems were found.

But in 2005, the bridge was one of thousands across the US rated as "structurally deficient" on the federal National Bridge Inventory database.
And those "thousands" of other bridges? Watch out for some of them being closed as a precaution...

The latest news I've read is saying 6 confirmed dead, 8 unaccounted for.

Still tragic, but far less so than it could've been.

I'm amazed, honestly, that the casualty count is so low. There were so many cars on that bridge and it was just devastated.
