US official: 50,000 Islamic State killed in wars to date, AP, Dec 9 2016
Quote:
WASHINGTON — A senior US military official for the first time says the US-led coalition has killed 50,000 Islamic State militants in the last two years in Iraq and Syria.
The official said it was a conservative estimate, but it’s a bit more than what others have stated before.

CIA: ISIS has 20,000 to 31,500 fighters, The Hills, Sep 11 2014
Quote:
The CIA estimates the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is made up of anywhere between 20,000-31,500 fighters, according to reports Thursday night.
The agency previously put the number at 10,000 but revised it upward after stronger recruitment since June, according to CIA spokesman Ryan Trapani, who was quoted in The Associated Press.
|
While ISIS forces come to existence seemingly out of nowhere only to get killed by the U.S. military, civilians in east-Aleppo vanish into the nowhere whenever the Syrian government forces take new areas.

Geert Wilders found guilty of inciting discrimination | World news | The Guardian
Quote:
However, the court cleared Wilders of the charge of inciting hatred and imposed no fine or sentence, ruling that a criminal conviction was sufficient punishment for a politician in Wilders’ position.
|
I don't see how. It's not like the scumbags who vote for him will consider not voting for him over it, if anything it will probably make him more popular. But then the courts here are almost worse than the politicians...

I don't see how [a criminal conviction alone is sufficient punishment for a politician in Wilders’ position].
I agree. I think the more Dutch voters ask that very question and demand an explanation from the judges, the better.

Well, he also appealed, so it's not over anyway.
Personally, I think he WAS definitely inciting hatred as well.

Sports Direct chairman criticises 'extreme campaign' as profits fall 57% | Business | The Guardian
Quote:
An undercover Guardian investigation last year exposed how Sports Direct workers were being paid less than the minimum wage. A scathing parliamentary committee report later compared conditions at its Shirebrook warehouse to a Victorian workhouse.
|
Quote:
an “extreme political, union and media campaign waged against this company” had damaged its reputation
|
Quote:
However, Sports Direct added that it is also about to take delivery of a new corporate plane, worth $51.1m (£40m). The company already has its own helicopter, a fleet of vehicles and also owns an inn in Worksop.
|
My heart bleeds for Mike Ashley. This relentless criticism of his actual decisions to pay people shit must have hurt his feelings so badly. Hasn't he suffered enough?

Re: News Miscellany
Robert Fisk on Aleppo:
Quote:
Western politicians, “experts” and journalists are going to have to reboot their stories over the next few days now that Bashar al-Assad’s army has retaken control of eastern Aleppo. We’re going to find out if the 250,000 civilians “trapped” in the city were indeed that numerous. We’re going to hear far more about why they were not able to leave when the Syrian government and Russian air force staged their ferocious bombardment of the eastern part of the city.
And we’re going to learn a lot more about the “rebels” whom we in the West – the US, Britain and our head-chopping mates in the Gulf – have been supporting.
|
There is more than one truth to tell in the terrible story of Aleppo | The Independent
He is way more optimistic than I am about how the media will 'have to reboot their stories'. Not seeing it anywhere yet and I fully expect them to totally ignore it. I saw them peddling the 250,000 inhabitants of 'rebel' Aleppo even yesterday, although the rebels had 2% of their former territory left and no more than 80,000 people in total had been evacuated. Nobody seemed to question where the hell they had gone. And if they do it's probably gonna end up as 'proof' that there was mass murder.

Re: News Miscellany
Here's my old pal Bernard of Moon of Alabama* covering some more fake news:
Quote:
The BBC is not the only #fakenews outlet in this. Indeed it seems that news agencies seek "safety in the pack" by all reporting the same nonsense through each and every channel.
Reuters - Aleppo could fall 'at any moment', U.N. reports civilians killed
AFP - Syria forces kill at least 82 Aleppo civilians in recent days: UN
AP - UN agency says dozens of children trapped in building under fire in Syria's Aleppo
Again - the UN only says that it knows of such reports. It does not verify or vouches for these.

Ok, this is pretty weird:
Quote:
The Arabic section of Russian Sputnik news agency reported that unidentifiable fighters and groups supported the Syrian army in the battle.
"The Syrian troops tried to identify their unknown allies but couldn’t," the report said.

Re: News Miscellany
I'm going back and forth on it, but I'm inclined to support Obama using senatorial shenanigans to appoint Garland while the Democrats have the senate majority for a few minutes.
I'm not sure if it would backfire or not. I'm also not sure whether it would merely appear to backfire (i.e. the GOP would do something they were going to do anyway, but claim it was because of that action).

Given the last six years, I'm not sure bolded even really matters.
