Default Would you go to Mars on a one-way ticket?

I totally would.

Quote:
Two scientists contend human travel to Mars could happen much more quickly and cheaply if the missions are made one-way. They argue that it would be little different from early settlers to North America, who left Europe with little expectation of return.

...

Davies and Schulze-Makuch say it's important to realize they're not proposing a "suicide mission."

"The astronauts would go to Mars with the intention of staying for the rest of their lives, as trailblazers of a permanent human Mars colony,"

"One way" as in, you die when you get there? Uh, probably not.

Did you read the part of the article that I quoted in the OP?

Answer: No, you don't necessarily die as soon as you arrive. You live the rest of your life on Mars.

It depends. Do I have to go through the new TSA screening?

Actually, the first goners"settlers" will set up a TSA station; every day that no one arrives they have to practice on each other.

Or maybe they can import 3-year-olds to search.

Mars isn't in space any more than Earth is. You just have to travel through space to get there. It's only like six months. Don't be a wuss.

I am a spacewuss and I have no problem so identifying. Besides, Mars is too in space more than Earth is. The idea of going to the moon or that crappy ISS gives me the hurls already and they're 3 steps away. Mars is way worse than that.

Don't listen to ES, Liv! Haven't you seen the documentaries?
Total Recall? I mean, 3-breasted women are cool, but psychic parasitic twins? Gross! Mission to Mars with Tim Robbins and Don Cheadle? Fuck that! Ghosts of Mars with Ice Cube? Red Planet with Val Kilmer? Mars Attacks?

Also, Mars is way more in space than Earth is. You know why? Because you have to travel through a fuck-load of space to get there. HA

Also, the latest theory on getting there involves insulating the ship with food, which as you eat you replace with your poop. As well, your urine? Guess where that's going, after some desalination and purification? Might want to bring a couple extra Brita filters.

I know how to get livius to Mars! It involves creating a gui using visual basic, hacking into the NASA and possibly the google too, making it look like all the probes discovered that our neighbor planet is a perfect replica of ye olde Rome and inhabited by beings who all look like Jon Hamm.

:unrun:

I wouldn't take a one way trip to Mars. Unless I had a dream that I was some undercover super spy and I had to so I could save both Mars and Earth and get the (possibly three breasted) girl. Then it might be worth it.

Honestly... I would definitely go to Mars, but I would insist on bringing my cameras, a computer and a large format printer.

And a lifetime supply of high quality dark chocolate. 3 or 4 tons should be enough.

No way. Mars might be kinda cool, but Earth is totally awesome. Plate tectonics, hydrological cycle, millions of species, and hundreds of millions of years of fossil record. Some of the humans are pretty cool too. Plenty of great stuff to see and learn.

Would not go.

I don't wanna spend the rest of my life with just the people who are on the crew + whoever might come later, assuming the mission isn't a failure (or unproductive enough that nobody is sent after us).

Plus no internet, no outdoors, no seeing anything but Mars except through pictures, etc. etc.
