See, I totally relate to that guy. I also can't say to my buddy, "What are you doing next weekend? You want to fly down to Miami and go fishing?"

NYT "Your Money" strikes again with more helpful money management tips:

A Bespoke Perfume Doesn’t Come Cheap
Quote:
As part of a trip to France in 1984 to study floral painting, Dianne Bernhard spent time in Monet’s gardens at Giverny. It was there, among the flowers that inspired him, that she heard Cartier was creating a new perfume in Paris made with jasmine, roses and vanilla.

“I said, ‘I’m going to go straight to Cartier as soon as I get out of class,’ said Mrs. Bernhard, a painter and former president of the National Arts Club in New York. “I loved the smell.”
I think we've all been there am I right.

I know it's not the topic of the article, but I also love the implication in the NYT article that the flowers in that garden were nearly sixty years old at least (Monet died at Giverny in 1926). :fflaugh:

Astonishingly, a Majority of sauna deaths occur under influence of alcohol.

Yes,
Quote:
mortality statistics bear out the common sense notion that taking a sauna while very intoxicated is not a good idea
And now that news in more detail.
Quote:
Common sense would suggest that taking a sauna while drunk is not wise. But professor Lasse Viinikka, who is also a doctor and the honorary chairman of the Finnish Sauna Society, says that "the mortality statistics bear this out: tens of people die in the sauna each year (in Finland). Of those, more than half were seriously drunk at the time of their death."
This does prompt a number of questions:
What proportion of those who didn't die were also seriously drunk?
What proportion of those who were seriously drunk but were prevented from taking a sauna still in fact died?
Does the surname Viinikaa mean "Little Wine" (diminutive of Viini)?

One thing is clear, fortunately:

Don't be absurd. A Finnish saying goes, roughly: "A drop won't kill, and you won't drown in a bucket".

Shock news: Ian Fleming was a homophobe who thought that his lesbian character, Pussy Galore, had a "psycho-sexual malady" which could be cured by forced sex with James Bond. :faint:

Now, if Goldfinger had been the spy novel version of Rubyfruit Jungle, then perhaps this would be newsworthy, but it becomes less so when you recall that this is exactly how he wrote their encounter. It's like reading a news article which reveals that Charles Dickens really hated the New Poor Law or that Thomas Paine thought that throwing off the colonialist yoke was an excellent idea.

Well, at least this part is, if not newsworthy, at least somewhat noteworthy ...

Quote:
The letter is estimated to make between £3,000 and £4,000, and will be sold at auction on 11 November by Bonhams.
... in that it demonstrates that somebody will be paying a gawdawful amount of money for this letter dripping with idiotic fuckwittery.

And to think Honor Blackman gave up a steady gig on The Avengers to play that part in the movie. Ah well, Blackman still makes movies and her departure from the show ultimately opened a door for Diana Rigg.

Trending on F*******k:

This could go in a gender thread because sadly there's nothing mysterious about why this is "news". It even has a code phrase, "wardrobe malfunction". But...

"nearly"? Ie they're reporting that something that shouldn't have happened didn't happen
"reports say"? Ie we aren't taken any responsibility for the truth or the newsworthiness of this non-incident
