Our house was the first to get a microwave oven (due to a forced remodel after the 1971 Sylmar earthquake.) My brother and I used to come home from school and experiment with snacks -- hamburger and egg sandwiches were our favorites.
We learned the fun.. erm... hard way about the exploding egg thing, though. The first time we made an egg in a bowl, we set the microwave on 20 seconds and looked (nope, not done), then another 10 (nope, not done), then 15. It looked done through the little door, so my brother took it out and looked closer.
Good thing he was wearing his safety glasses, but he had some burns on his face. He thought it was hilarious, in spite of the injury. And we went out, bought another dozen eggs and proceeded to blow them all up. In the interest of science and culinary knowledge, of course. Quite a mess, but we cleaned it up and our folks were none the wiser.
Ah, the life of latchkey kids.
