My reaction to the Kate Spade news was, “That’s too bad.” It sucks whenever anyone ends their life, especially when they’ve got a thirteen-year-old daughter. But it didn’t ruin my whole day.

Waking up to the Bourdain news has ruined my whole day. As one of the tweets I saw in response to his death pointed out, he was one of the few celebrities that seemed to spend his whole career trying to teach Americans not to be afraid of other people. We needed that more now than ever. I’m unaccountably shaken by this.

If you need help:

The National Suicide Prevention 24 Hour Hotline is (800) 273-8255

Lifeline

You can also text HOME to the Crisis Text Line at 741741.

ETA: Great tribute from Wonkette.

I'm kinda of two minds, one is that I hope things are better for him, but also that as a public figure part of your duty is to endure the shit hole and give us hope. As someone who has been all not to recently suicidal and has had friends die of suicide, even if I feel I have no friends, family, connections, the pain caused is still too great. Suicide is the best preventer of suicide around. So my thoughts are really that hopefully this impacted someone realizing they impact others.

as a 50 something woman with a 13 year old kid, I'm impacted by Kate Spade, who was a nice person who designed useful and pretty women's clothing. I can tell you right now, useful women's clothing is as rare as hen's teeth and impacts us in many ways, economically and practically.

as someone who loves food and culture Anthony Bourdain impacted in other ways, celebrity chefs and culinary schools are still rather rare and new. Food is (as a cultural anthropologist) one of the best ways to understand, without appropriating another person's culture.

It's not as bad as the AIDs crisis, but suicide and depressions still rob of us people we should have.

RIP Matt "Guitar" Murphy, who for decades was one of the best blues guitarists in the business.

He labored largely in obscurity, but got some popular recognition in the 70s as part of the Dan Aykroyd/John Belushi Blues Brothers band, which was actually loaded with first-rate musicians.

R.I.P. to Harlan Ellison, prolific, seminal science fiction author. Amongst his work was one of my favourite Star Trek episodes of all time, "The City on the Edge of Forever". He also wrote "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream", one of the most terrifying short stories ever written, which he later adapted into an equally famed game. His bibliography is colossal and I'm sure others here can fill in some of the gaps.

ETA: excellent tribute from Cory Doctorow, whom I seem to be linking each time a giant of science fiction dies:

RIP, Harlan Ellison / Boing Boing

Also this is a much more complete summary of his career

There's an excellent doc "Dreams with Sharp Teeth" made in 2008 about him. It's a bit light on how much of an asshole he was but also painting the picture of an interesting asshole.

He seems to have been a textbook example of what TV Tropes would term a "jerk with a heart of gold". He could be an extraordinary asshole at times and on more than a few occasions reduced people to tears (including Connie Willis from what I understand), but on the other hand...

Well, ordinarily I wouldn't make a second post in this thread about the same person, with a Facebook link no less, but just read the fucking thing.

It's going to take awhile for me to parse out how human beings can be such a mess of contradictions. At his worst, he was much worse than I'd ever contemplate being, but at his best, he was much braver and more generous than I've ever been, and likely ever will be.

If you're going to mention TV Tropes, you might as well make it as easy as possible for people to follow the link and waste the rest of the day.

That's why I didn't link to TV Tropes. I have standards.

...well, that, plus I'm on vacation and do you know how much of a pain in the arse it is to copy and paste links on a smartphone?

But as long as I'm in this thread again, a couple more Harlan Ellison links:

R.I.P. to comics author/artist Steve Ditko. Dude may have been an Objectivist whackaloon, but he co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange (amongst countless others), and that ain’t nothin’.

In case you haven’t seen it, Alan Moore wrote a parody of the Velvet Underground’s “Sister Ray” based on Ditko’s character Mr A:

Moore’s own character Rorschach is largely based on Mr A and The Question, another Ditko character.

I imagine Spider-Man's origin story would be quite different if it had been written after Ditko entered his Objectivist phase.

R.I.P. to screenwriter Shinobu Hashimoto, who receives credit, among others, for many of Akira Kurosawa’s greatest pictures (Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Rashōmon, Ikiru, etc.). He was 100. George Lucas says “thank you” for The Hidden Fortress in particular.

John McCain died today. He was a tireless champion of the interests of the moneyed elite, and worked hard to deny millions of Americans medical insurance. McCain always made time in his day to deny women abortion rights.

He never met a foreign war that he didn't like- the number of bodies he was willing to stand on top of, to further the interests of Neo-Liberal globalism, was virtually limitless. His only regret was that he never got that Iran war he wanted so badly.

I'm sure someone will miss him, but I only wish he had died in that plane crash in Vietnam a long, long time ago.
Well, correction: I only wish we had never engaged in that war in Indochina, and sent people to die there in the first place, but beggars can't be choosers.
Burn in imaginary hell, John McCain.

Pretty good overview of how McCain was mostly crap, but had a few redeeming qualities:

McCain - Lawyers, Guns & Money

Of course, most of his redeeming qualities make him no better than the worst Democratic Senator, much less the median Democrat.

I will note also that he, of course, supports the GOP agenda under Trump and wishes to see it furthered just about as much as possible. Which is why when it was clear he was never returning to Washington and was thus not providing any representation to his constituents, he chose... to hold onto his seat, to ensure that when the Republican governor chooses his replacement, that replacement will serve until 2021, instead of triggering a special election this year. If he had resigned by the end of May, at which time he would've spent nearly 6 months without being present for a single vote in the Senate (i.e. it was clear he wasn't coming back), his seat would've been up for a special election this November. But since the GOP would have a strong chance of losing that special election for multiple reasons*, even potentially damaging their chances in the regularly scheduled senate race, he couldn't do that. He wants Trump to, at a minimum, get to continue to fill the courts with right-wing nutjobs and bigots.

Now, he obviously didn't choose to die now instead of January, but I had really hoped that he could at least hold out until then since the GOP governor in Arizona is vulnerable and a Democrat choosing his replacement would be far preferable, even given that AZ law requires the replacement be the same party as the decedent.

*Democrats are having a strong year anyway, of course. But Republicans have three candidates in the current primary. One, McSally, is decent, but still trails the probable Democrat in the polls. The other two are much weaker. Kelli Ward, for example, has the political instincts to post on Facebook whining that McCain's impeding death was overshadowing her campaign events, and the other is racist piece of shit Joe Arpaio. A special election would undoubtedly draw one of them away from the race for Flake's seat. They would both have a stronger chance of winning a primary when not competing against the other.
