You are indeed supposed to cure them. It dries out the wrappers so that you can store the heads for months without spoilage. That's how you get to use your fresh heads of garlic well into the winter.

Those pumpkins already look fairy tale ready.

Ahhh, so the curing is just to be able to store as bulbs then. I thought maybe it had an impact on flavour. We aren't storing any that way, mostly because we don't really have any cool, dry places to keep them. We need a garage really or a basement, either would be nice.

We were watching youtube videos today on how to tell when they're done :) Even the orange ones are probably a ways off yet. I'm soooooo looking forward to some :pie:

The pumpkins are in! :pumpkin: :slide: :pumpkin:

I took a pic with and without flash, the first one is a better representation of the true colour, but you can see the chicken checking out the pumpkin (and Alice wanting to come inside) better in the second one.

They are called Rouge Vif d'Etampes pumpkins and except the one in front they all have a lovely deep red-orange colour. Sou accidentally cut the vine off three of them a little early, which is why one is more a classic orange pumpkin colour. It's time to start making some cheesecake and pie!

Pumpkin cheesecake is on the way....

So we cut up one of the biggest pumpkins first. Some things that were different from normal jack-o-lantern pumpkins: 1) the walls were thicker 2) there was therefore less pulp and seeds 3) it smelled of watermelon! :watermelon: That was pretty cool.

Here is a picture of the chopped up pumpkin with a dessert spoon for size
20161018_155523.jpg

And here is 3/4 of that badboy steaming away in our two large steamers. Couldn't fit the whole thing in there!
20161018_160608.jpg

It's all done now and cooling before I scrape out the pulp. Hoping to get a cheesecake done by bedtime so it's ready for tomorrow :piewedge:

Finally, we have a twisted hazel nut tree out front that Sou bought about 3 years ago. Today we harvested all the nuts:

So yeah, we have eaten a shit load of pumpkin stuff in the last 10 days

This is what we made, all from that ONE pumpkin :nowai:

1 pumpkin cheesecake - awesome, like super awesome - got the recipe from home and it is top notch

2 pumpkin pies - fantastic! I use the same recipe every year now

2 loaves of 'pumpkin guts' bread* - holy shit people, this was super fucking awesome. It was moist like the wickedest banana bread and just as tasty. YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS. Pumkin Gut Bread

1 batch of pumpkin white pasta sauce - this wasn't great really, neither Sou or I liked it much and we won't be making it again (thus no link because we didn't save it)

1 batch of tuscan pumpkin pasta sauce - we liked this one much better, it was okish while trying it from the pan, but once mixed with the spagetti and some Parmesan cheese it was actually really nice and we're saving this one. Tuscan Pummpkin Pasta Sauce

1 batch of pumpkin pancakes - they were decent, very, very thick batter that meant you could make a nice thick pancake, but honestly they weren't any better than normal pancakes really. Good way to use up some extra pumpkin puree, but probably not really worth going out of your way to make. Pumpkin Pancakes

And finally, one of the best for last: 1 batch of pumpkin hummus - really, really amazing. I sort of  hummus and this was great. We both loved, loved, loved it. Total keeper. Pumpkin Hummus (we did not add the cinnamon)

Oh and we roasted the seeds with some sour cream and onion flavouring - yummy, Sou finds them a little chewy, but I love them.

Sou says any suggestions for something to make with the next pumpkin would be very welcome (I keep saying all cheesecake and hummus :D). She already has her eye on something called "no-knead pumpkin rolls with brown sugar glaze".

*So we can now use all of the pumpkin except the skin. Puree, guts and seeds :yes!:

We have 2 cherry trees, one which we only found this year after cutting back about 4 foot of jungle in the garden. The other tree we've had for a few years now and never got a single cheery from it. The fucking birds steal them all before they're ripe.

So this year we took the time and effort to net the entire tree. It's worked a charm so far and we've just started getting some ripe cherries finally.
Cheery 2.jpg

They are so beautiful, here is the best I could do on a close up to show the lovely mottled look they have.
Cherry1.jpg

Hand shot for size.
Cheery 3.jpg

The tree we discovered this year had about 40 cherries on it that are all gone now - fucking birds  So it looks like we'll be netting 2 trees next year.

The fruit harvest continues! It was a very good day for the raspberries and we thought there would be an equal amount of blueberries, but many look a beautiful deep purple on top, but are still slightly green on bottom.

bey planted one of those fruit salad trees at our house a year or 2 ago, and it's starting to bear fruit salad!

fruit.jpg

The plums and apricots are both really squishy and sweet.

After that photo was taken, I picked a peach. It was small and crunchy, but not tart. I think maybe another year until we start seeing full-sized peaches (but what do I know?).

I had to look that one up, what an awesome tree.

You probably have great weather to grow peaches, we don't get enough sun here. The neighbours have a peach tree that does produce peaches, but they are small and not very nice.

Mmmmmm peaches :homdrool:

The purple beans are starting to produce! We weren't sure we would get anything from these plants because after sprouting them indoors they got a bit sunburnt when we first started putting them out to harden them off. But in our garden it's sink or swim and we planted them up anyway. They've recovered fairly well and the beans are coming already.

Sou says that they turn green when you cook them... what kind of bullshit reverse magic trick is that?!

So, I just did my first shearing on the basil herd and whipped up about a liter and a half of fresh made pesto.

My longstanding vines of Niagara grapes are doing a bang-up job of producing fruit this year. If they all ripen, I'll be tablegrape rich.

Last year, I put in berries....strawberries along side the front steps and raspberry canes in the back, in front of the back fence. Both produced reasonably well their first year out. Snacking in the garden has definitely taken an upturn this year. There is more motivation to be out there pulling weeds.

I got my six tomatoes in about a month back and they are only now beginning to top the cages. Although I have a few blossoms, there are no fruit set. I'm still searching for decent slicers; every year I do this. Last year's crop was a dead loss, in that I was in the UK during regular planting time and didn't get them in the ground until a month too late. Hopefully, this year, I will actually get to eat a tomato grown in my own garden.

Firsts for me this year are two hills of melons (cantaloupe) and two plants of Hungarian Hot Wax peppers. The melons were planted at the same time as the tomatoes and in the 'mater patch. Only this week have I seen discernible new leaf/vine production....and, a blossom. The peppers were blooming when I got them and now I'm trying to determine just when it is I'm supposed to harvest the peppers.

I also have six cannabis plants, each in their own pot, located in sunny spots. This is year three for me. This year, I expanded the number of plants; I put in two Purple Punch, two Gorilla Glue #4, a Pineapple Kush, and a Jack the Ripper. The latter is doing the best. All went in as the same time as the tomatoes and all have topped their support grids (they were 'knee-high by the fourth of July').

Other than that, I have several tubs with a mix of various herbs....sage, rosemary, curry, thyme, marjoram, and lots of catnip.

The pumpkins are done and harvested. We think the top 2 were cross pollinated with one of the neighbours squash plants. Looking forward to the pumpkin hummus, pumpkin cheesecake and of course pumpkin pie. Oh and the pumpkin guts bread! Sooooo yummy :hungry:

Just looked up thread to last year's pic and we got 1 more pumpkin this year, but the average size is much smaller.

The best maker was a cherry tomato tumbler plant, we got heaps of minimal dark red tomatoes off that one, they got sun for a considerable amount of the day when it really turned out...
