The problem is that when a person is in treatment, all they need to do is parrot back what the Doctor is telling them and the Doctor will then pronounce them 'cured' and let them go. If part of the sentence is treatment, OK, but have them serve the full time according to the crime in a regular prison after the cure.

This might belong more in Miscellany, but it was a WTF moment for us. Yesterday two men walked into the library, went immediately to the mens' room, took apart the toilet and took off with a large chunk of piping. If the custodian hadn't thought they looked shifty and might steal toilet paper we might not have found out until someone complained about flooding. As it was we got the water turned off and called the cops right away. Turns out they hit the nearby college six times and also a theater down the street. Crazy!

Scrap metal is up these days, and if no-one is expecting it, stealing is easier to get away with. People expect someone to steal jewles or money, but metal pipe? Who-da thought it?

There are several :facepalm:

-worthy moments here. First is the implication that simply teaching students about one of the forty most widely performed operas necessarily means one is indoctrinating them into devil-worship. I suppose any Sunday School that teaches students about Satan must open itself to the same charge.

Second is the idea that trouser roles, which go back to Baroque opera (even in the days of castrati, there's evidence that some male roles were written for mezzo-sopranos) and have thus gone unremarked for almost five hundred years, are simply there to lure the unwary into the 'gay lifestyle'.

Third is the absolute philistinism and ignorance shown by the people making the complaint. If they knew anything about Gounod's Faust or the composer himself, they ought to know that the composer was extremely devout and the opera is consequently very boring and didactic. To Gounod, the miracle and the central point of the Faust story is not Faust himself, but the salvation of Marguerite, and he dwells on it for thirty or more agonizing minutes. Seeing it performed requires powers of endurance which I have to admit that I lack. This is why I regard Feruccio Busoni's Doctor Faust as by far the superior operatic treatment.

The idea that this is a work promoting devil-worship can only be maintained by people who are completely ignorant of the opera, the composer, or the story itself (based on Goethe's Faust, Part I), and more importantly completely unashamed of their ignorance.

A Google search for her name turned up some results that indicate she is still teaching (elsewhere) and performing. Interestingly enough, it also turned up a Facebook page for a Methodist church where she performed in November of last year.

On Februrary 27, 2012, 17-year-old T. J. Lane, wearing a white t-shirt with "KILLER" handwritten on the front, opened fire with his uncle's .22 Ruger in the cafeteria of Chardon High School, Ohio. He killed three students and wounded three, one of whom is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Today he was sentenced to three life sentences without parole. At the hearing, he wore a white t-shirt with "KILLER" written on the front. After the victim impact statements, Lane made a brief statement of his own:

I don't know if FF is a magnet for people who hang around just to tell us we suck in a variety of contexts, or if it's just that they get banned on other forums. But I don't think I've seen a forum that had such a large percentage of people who would actually stick around just looking for opportunities to deliver wicked ice burns to the forum at large.
