More forced conversions going on than reported, says MP - The Express Tribune

I would support buying the search histories of legislators who voted to repeal these rules (read: Republicans), but that's not going to happen.

ISPs are not forthcoming about what exactly they're selling and in what context, but I'm pretty comfortable predicting that they are not going to sell out the people who just handed them this.

Legally, they could, of course, but they legally could have been doing it already, so someone should have already bought them if they were available. I'm not even sure there's a single, publicly available source for purchasing individuals' internet histories at all, but if there is, I can just about promise that it will not include those who just granted the ISPs their fondest wish.

Their privacy does very much need to be violated right now, but that's going to have to happen the old fashioned way.

This would actually be a really good time to start going hard for municipal broadband, especially for those of us in states with legislative barriers.

Incumbent ISPs can often afford to shovel enough bullshit to get dumbasses to vote against their interests on that count, but right now, with people actually paying a little bit of attention, anything that went up for a vote would have a much better chance of getting through.

Eddie Izzard's registration for the Palestinian marathon was rejected because he crosses the picket line:

Quote:
The Palestinian Campaign for the Cultural and Academic Boycott of Israel, commented: “Eddie Izzard is not welcomed in the Palestine marathon after he has crossed our boycott picket line. Today, performing in Tel Aviv is equivalent to performing in Sun City during the time of apartheid, and there is no balancing act that can justify violating the Palestinian boycott call. We refuse to be used as a fig leaf to cover up Izzard’s whitewashing of Israel’s occupation and apartheid.”
Eddie Izzard’s registration for Palestine Marathon this Friday sent back to him by organisers – Artists for Palestine UK

Blast hits St. Petersburg metro carriage | Russia News | Al Jazeera
St Petersburg metro blast leaves many injured - media - BBC News
St Petersburg metro rocked by explosion | World news | The Guardian

At this point the Guardian item has the most detail but it's not a lot.

Quote:
The blast apparently occurred at the Sennaya Ploshchad station in the centre of Russia’s second biggest city.

Photographs from the scene showed a metro train in the station with one set of doors blown out, and a number of people on the ground with injuries. There was no immediate information about the number of casualties or what caused the explosion.

The news agency TASS reported 10 people had died and 20 were injured in the blast, though the figures could not be immediately verified.

A live stream on the Russian website Life News said there had been either one or two explosions around 2.30pm local time.

Those pages have now been updated with more details.

Quote:
Russian media initially reported that there were two explosions, but officials later said that there was only one blast which happened as the train was moving between the Sennaya Ploshchad and the Tekhnologichesky Institut stations.

Hours later, police found and deactivated a second explosive device at another metro station, one of the city's busiest, sending a wave of fear across St Petersburg.

After a few hours of differing casualty tolls, Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said 10 people died from the blast. City health authorities said 43 others were taken to hospital.
Everyone is being sensibly cautious about the cause. My initial suspicion was Chechen terrorists, but it could be ISIS given Russia's heavy hand in Syria.

Exactly what the US wants.
The Mexican drug war is basically America convincing mexicans to kill other mexicans. We've given cartels guns, money and free reign so long as they stay south of the border.

Ok, maybe you noticed something about Syria I DIDN'T post: the whole thing about the supposed chemical attack on Khan Sheikhun. I'm not buying that for several reasons: very convenient timing for the enemies of Assad: just when the US announces the removal of Assad is no longer their goal, we get that? Secondly: there apparently is no way SU22 planes can deliver chemical weapons and thirdly there were pictures of 'White Helmets (aka al-Qaeda) helping people who had supposedly been exposed to nerve gas with BARE HANDS. Not bloody likely. So unless I get some evidence for non-al-Qaeda sources I'm not convinced and I'll chalk it up as another al-Qaeda attempt to get Western countries to be their airforce.

I caught the bare hands thing my self. Also, why go to the trouble and the attendant bad publicity of using chemical weapons when conventional munitions work better? As a terror bonus power up? I'm thinking those people are already fully terrorized. Your theory about AQ (or ISIS?) is at least plausible. I don't really have a dog in that fight, btw, I just wish it would be over. I don't really want the US to get any more involved, either.

Basically my position is: let the Russians finish off ISIS and al-Qaeda. I'm pretty sure they'd force Assad to be reasonable to at least the Kurds. Best shot it seems to me. The rebels are so thoroughly infiltrated and dominated by al-Qaeda and yet so fucking divided there's no way to deal with them. And they started this big offensive that broke what was left of the ceasefire.

Quote:
Over half a million Syrians are dead. Half the population is displaced. There is sadness across Syria, from one side of the firing line to another. Aerial bombardment by the Americans, the Russians, the Syrians and others continues to devastate Syria and Iraq. The Americans recently admitted to a major atrocity in Mosul, where 200 civilians have been killed. That attack did not seize the Security Council or bring forth fulminations from the Western press. Hypocrisy is central to the morals at the Security Council. This does not mean one should not be horrified by what has happened at Khan Shaykhun.

But more than anything, the international community must urge a thorough investigation of these events before rushing either to a forensic judgment about what happened and to a response—particularly a military response—in retaliation. Sober heads need to prevail. War is rarely the answer. Particularly when we don’t as yet know the question.
