We call it the rolling roadblock, and if I'm not feeling that generous I yell at them for being speed-matchers.

I'm not saying which pronunciation is 'correct' (there is no such thing as 'correct' pronunciation IMO)
For what it's worth, when I first encountered the word, I assumed it had the British pronunciation (rhyming with folder).

But apparently the American pronunciation may preserve the original sound, and the spelling with 'l' might have been favored to represent the etymology (it's related to "solid").

I would prefer if English stopped having such stupid spelling, in which case we should either pronounce it like folder and keep the spelling the same, or change the spelling to sodder. I don't have a strong preference, but I do think it's dumb how silent letters have been inserted into other words for similar reasons (like in debt, doubt or receipt), sometimes incorrectly as in island (from Old English iegland, not Latin insula) or ptarmigan (Celtic, not Greek, so not a justified silent p).

Way back in probably the late 80s early 90s, there was a guy around here who used to do that. He had some ridiculous big vehicle like a Hummer or something, and he'd pace another large vehicle during these stretches where the highway between Denver and Boulder was two lanes.

And he'd post about it on local newsgroups, so there was always a thread about it in the Boulder group. His argument was that speeding was illegal and what he was doing wasn't. (Which was true at the time.)

Two ladies at Costco yesterday. Standing in front of the doorway cart to cart talking to each other so you had to walk your cart in a loop by the exit door and around them to get by. As if nobody else going to Costco would ever need to get into the store. They were still there when I left. I should have made a snow plow noise and barreled through them demolition derby style.

Move off to the side and catch up with each other, or better yet go somewhere nicer then the Costco entrance to talk for a half hour.

I don't know if it is an American thing or an English-language thing, but calling all smartphones "iphones" is really starting to annoy me.

I think it's a stupid person thing. And an Apple-cultist thing. (There is at least some overlap.)

My first thought was that I don't think I've heard people do that.

My second thought was maybe I have, and just assumed they actually meant iPhones. It's not like I pay close attention when people talk about their phones.

As terrible as calling all tissue paper Kleenex.

Or using Xerox as a verb.

... probably an English language thing.

Hoovering.
Also Q-tips and Band-aids.

Those all sound American to me? Or do Brits use any of them?

Just got it AGAIN in an other podcast where someone mentioned that some people might watch tv show episodes "on their iphones". Well I don't, you fool, because my android's screen is much bigger than my friggin iphone's!!

I really really don't like that thing where corporations do those little cutesy campaigns designed to go viral and make everyone say, "Oh, I am friends with this heartless corporation now," so I hereby denounce the following link that I'm going to post because it'll bug me if I don't:

Hoovering as a replacement to vacuum is very much british. In the US it’s moved on to mean consuming very fast. Like to hoover up your breakfast but rarely to mean boring old vacuuming.

Interesting. I have never heard my UK or Irish relatives use hoovering, but it might be regional or depend on the person/family in question. Thermos and velcro I was also raised with, though.

Yes, all the others sound American to me, but hoovering is old-fashioned British. Not so current any more.

Fucking callbacks. I can't even figure out a way to block those without turning off Javascript entirely.

I'm seriously considering just blocking the sites that abuse it the worst. (Also I have considered finding the people responsible and punching them right in the fucking face.)
