Re: Miscellany
The beginning of this video is just the basic idea of memes. The stuff at the end about the angry memes is very interesting though.

Re: Miscellany
CGP Grey is awesome. And he may have successfully infected me to the point of watching some of his other videos.
But I didn't become angry during this video ... I didn't even feel particularly informed. Isn't this stuff obvious?

Re: Miscellany
On an unrelated note, I was just thinking about old sitcoms and how there would tend to be some situation brewing where the protagonist would face impending humiliation, I Love Lucy being a prime example. As a child I would always flee from the room. Still hate that stuff today. We're supposed to identify with the character and yet still to laugh at their pain.

Word. I can watch all kinds of things and not be too bothered, but humiliation, especially for comic effect, is the worst.

Re: Miscellany
A couple of guys came to our house last night and asked us who our internet provider was. They assumed we had Comcast, but we have Verizon. They then said that they worked for Verizon (despite no Verizon-branded clothing or name tags) and that we were paying too much for our internet.
They told us we could get the same service for 1/3rd of the price. When I pointed out we already had service, they suggested that I could get service in my name (the service is under my roommate's name currently). When I said that they wouldn't allow me to get service at the same address without cancelling the other service (which I know because the management had been running our place as an airbnb and had Verizon internet for the entire house when we moved in, and Verizon wouldn't install it for our unit until the old service was cancelled), they claimed that this was not the case. Why I would want to have an additional account when our current service is adequate, I don't know.
I'm not sure what kind of scam they were running (just to get access to our home, or to get our credit card info, or sign us up for service more expensive than they told us, etc.) but there's pretty much no way that was not a scam, right?
Have you ever heard of this one?

Re: Miscellany
Yup, scam. But they must assume a pretty good hit rate for it to be worth visiting houses and spending time on it.

Re: Miscellany
I went home early sick yesterday, so I was home for a sales call. Some guy with no ID on his clothes, no props like a clipboard or order sheet and no visible truck tried to tell me he was in the neighborhood doing food deliveries and tried to sell me some steaks. I told him to leave. No way in hell I'm buying steaks from some random dude on the street. I don't want food poisoning.

I wouldn't buy that, either, but the best oranges I've ever had came from Mexican guys selling them door to door in my old neighborhood.
Once, I bought too many and got a little sick from eating too many of them, but that was on me.

When I lived in Chicago I used to buy tamales from some random Latino guy at the bar. I think they were the best thing ever but then again I was always drunk.

Re: Miscellany
I bought frozen steaks on the street once in Texas. They were frozen rock solid and they looked good. Tasted good too. Guy sold them from a big refrigerated truck. Probably still dodgy though.
