What with Louie, the hydroxybonercream3000 fan "doctor" who thinks the etiology of endometriosis involves demons astral projecting into women's dreams and dream-banging them (no doubt peacegirl's latest quackery deity), and the millions of other dangerous loons out there, we're entering self-defense territory quickly. It's either them or us.

I hate to break the schadenfreude

Quote:
In a study of children under five who show mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19, those kids were found to contain higher concentrations of the virus compared to older children, teens and adults, according to researchers at a Chicago pediatric hospital and Northwestern University.

The findings come as parents, educators and policymakers around the world grapple with the question of whether it's safe to reopen day-care centers and schools in the coming weeks.

The study, which was released Thursday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics, did not test the transmission rate of children—but does raise the prospect that children could be just as, or even more, prone to COVID infection and transmission than adults, although symptoms in the vast majority of children are comparably milder, the researchers found.

"One of the things that’s come up in the whole school reopening discussion, is: since kids are less sick, is it because they have less of the virus?," said Taylor Heald-Sargent, the lead author and a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and assistant professor of pediatrics at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
So surprising probably no one, but kids are teeming with SARS-CoV-2 in spite of their relatively mild symptoms. This doesn't show that they trasmit the virus, but there is no reason and never was a reason to think that they couldn't transmit it as they transmit colds (and thus other coronavirus)just fine.

https://fortune.com/2020/07/30/child...al-load-study/

I haven't bothered to dig up the paper directly because this falls mostly in the no shit category.

Kamilah: mortality for children seems incredibly low, though. With over 50,000 deaths in the UK, a total of 6 children under 15 have died from CV19 in the UK.

Dragar: and is that because they have either "undeveloped" immune systems or "powerful fast-developing" immune systems (I'm not sure which is the best way to put it), and it's emerging that an out-of-control immune response (cytokine storms, etc) is a major factor in covid-19 mortality?

I don't think anyone knows. There are publications for all sorts of hypotheses to explain the huge mortality difference with age, but it's very early days to know.

Yeah, bro didn't string that tweet together very well. The first one suggested the little germ vessels will spread it to every parent and grandparent and then the parent or grandparent gets sick or disabled. Net result: radicalization.

That's a lot of guns them 'Mericuns have.

Still wild though how having guns and somehow being okay with delayed American elections are somehow not two entirely separate circles in a Venn diagram.

This is pretty important, the whole thing, but here's the most important part for lazies.

Quote:
Most troubling of all, perhaps, was a sentiment the expert said a member of Kushner’s team expressed: that because the virus had hit blue states hardest, a national plan was unnecessary and would not make sense politically. “The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political strategy,” said the expert.

That logic may have swayed Kushner. “It was very clear that Jared was ultimately the decision maker as to what [plan] was going to come out,” the expert said.

Sure Half of the YMCA camp got Rona in 4 days, but I'm sure schools will be fine

Following all the safety guidelines in Georgia probably doesn't mean very much.

But camps will have new rules – imposed by the state of Georgia. There’s a list of 32 new requirements for day camps accepting children including:

Children and workers to be checked for fever and other COVID-19 symptoms each day;
Parents remaining in vehicles at check-in;
Campers' hands get squirted with hand sanitizer upon drop-off.
It allows groups of up to twenty adults and children with no social distancing requirement – keeping those groups together for the duration of the camp with no mingling with other groups.
It requires masks for workers “as appropriate.”
It requires a quick exit of any sick camper or worker, with no return for at least ten days.
Overnight camps remain closed, though the governor's order says that's at the discretion of the state Department of Public Health.

New Jersey had been doing well, reopened and kept R < 1 for a few weeks, but people are stupid and reckless and now it's creeping up again. I chewed out a junior coworker (non housebound type) for wearing their mask under their chin. We were in a tiny control room with two workers from the business we were servicing. I told him he was young and he could put me underground if he has it and passes it to me. He was defensive and said "I save lives, not kill people", thus demonstrating his total lack of understanding the risk he posed. I didn't bother to ask what his dumb remark was supposed to mean. I don't give a shit. He needs to wear his mask if he's going to work around me. I chewed out a gas attendant the same way. "You're supposed to be wearing a mask. Young buck like you could put an old fart like me underground". He was at least cool enough to just put his mask on and not act injured. My coworker is an engineer, not a gas attendant.

Of course, correcting people who are disconnected from reality due to their political leanings is not without risk. Man, 35, charged with attempted homicide in cigar store shooting, but still on lam - lehighvalleylive.com
Quote:
A 35-year-old Slatington man is charged with attempted homicide and related counts after he fired gunshots at a clerk who told him he had to wear a mask in a Bethlehem Township cigar store, authorities report.
I think we're going to see more of this kind of acting out. It's so weird, both sides of this issue are sure they're right, but since the two views are mutually exclusive, one side is necessarily in error.
