Got any great examples of geek humor on the web?

All I can think of, off-hand, is when Frasier said to a call-in, "Euripides, Eumenides!"

Does that count?

(It cracked me up!)

Btw, I don't get it. Even though I understand that the flying man is doing an older language (PERL) an' shit - I still don't get it. And if that's it, then I definitely don't get it! :peek:

If you don't mind a bit of Mac humor, there's always Joy of Tech.

pepperspray, regular expressions allow you to look through text for specific patterns. So, the guy swinging in from above knows how to write a regular expression to identify text that looks like an address, presumably the vacation address for the girl.

Lots of languages use regex, but Perl has a pretty powerful regex library, hence the reason he's typing in Perl. There's a certain geek affection for the language too, even though a lot of people (like me) don't like it.

When you have to explain it, it's not as funny. :yes!:

That just means you are not a geek. :sadcheer:

ETA: PERL is an older language? :egad:

I don't know anything about PERL really, yet I still figured out what regular expressions are just based on the context.

I mean, what's gonna help you find an address in a bunch of emails other than a feature that finds things that are formatted like an address?

Anyway, isn't a lot of the humor on :ff: geek humor?

I mean, you got some examples right here: http://www.freethought-forum.com/for...ad.php?t=12475

So guys, don't try to parse HTML with regular expressions.

html - RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags - Stack Overflow

Quote:
You can't parse [X]HTML with regex. Because HTML can't be parsed by regex. Regex is not a tool that can be used to correctly parse HTML. As I have answered in HTML-and-regex questions here so many times before, the use of regex will not allow you to consume HTML. Regular expressions are a tool that is insufficiently sophisticated to understand the constructs employed by HTML. HTML is not a regular language and hence cannot be parsed by regular expressions. Regex queries are not equipped to break down HTML into its meaningful parts. so many times but it is not getting to me. Even enhanced irregular regular expressions as used by Perl are not up to the task of parsing HTML. You will never make me crack. HTML is a language of sufficient complexity that it cannot be parsed by regular expressions. Even Jon Skeet cannot parse HTML using regular expressions. Every time you attempt to parse HTML with regular expressions, the unholy child weeps the blood of virgins, and Russian hackers pwn your webapp. Parsing HTML with regex summons tainted souls into the realm of the living. HTML and regex go together like love, marriage, and ritual infanticide. The <center> cannot hold it is too late.

:fixed:

I parse tons of HTML with regex. You just gotta be sure you know that the HTML conforms to some constraints, and what those constraints are.
