Default Concept

From Wikipedia...

A concept is an abstraction or generalization from experience or the result of a transformation of existing ideas. The concept is instantiated (reified) by all of its actual or potential instances, whether these are things in the real world or other ideas. Concepts are treated in many if not most disciplines both explicitly, such as in psychology, philosophy, etc., and implicitly, such as in mathematics, physics, et

When the mind makes a generalization such as the concept of tree, it extracts similarities from numerous examples; the simplification enables higher-level thinking.

In metaphysics, and especially ontology, a concept is a fundamental category of existence. In contemporary philosophy, there are at least three prevailing ways to understand what a concept is:[1][See talk page]

Concepts as mental representations, where concepts are entities that exist in the brain,

Concepts as abilities, where concepts are abilities peculiar to cognitive agents, and

Concepts as abstract objects, where objects are the constituents of propositions that mediate between thought, language, and referents.

Since, generally speaking, a concept is the result of experience, a concept develops with age.

As soon as a child begins to experience the world outside the child's own world, the child develops a concept.

Since concepts are a generalization they are a shorthand for information provided by the senses.

Rather than knowing all the different types of dogs the person calls them a dog.

Rather than knowing all the different types of trees the person calls them a tree.

This is very simple and suitable starting in childhood. As the person grows and experiences life concepts become more complex.

As a person experiences more of life some concepts which may be used are a book, a bicycle, a girl, and a boy.

Rather than having knowledge of all the different types of books, a concept such as a book is used.

Rather than having knowledge of all the different types and brand names of bicycles, a concept such as bicycle is used.

This reasoning applies to the use of every concept.

It sounds like a pretty fun party game, but I have not tried it myself so I can't recommend it. I think they played it on Table Top once.

Thanks Crunb. I have never played the game either.

However, I am able to understand and use a concept.

With still greater experience with life, I increase my knowledge about a concept.

At a later age I know a building as a concept without knowing all the different types of buildings.

I know a car as a concept without knowing all the different makes and models.

This process goes on an entire life, always adding new knowledge.
