Re: Miscellany
I saw a guy fall off a ladder and land on his face right on his driveway today. There was someone else out there with him, and there wasn't much I could have done to help, but I wish I knew if he was OK. He landed really hard. He's got to have some kind of head injury.
So you guys: Don't put up Xmas lights. It's not worth it!

Re: Miscellany
We put up our lights already (Kiddo insisted), and were having to set the ladder up right in our still blooming plants. I was all "It looks like fucking Hawaii in here, and we're hanging plastic snowflakes". In related news, the lanatana seems to have become sentient and has a domination fantasy because it has grown over everything including a palm tree.
My BIL came over for poker tonight and mentioned how he was glad we had practice, because most every Thanksgiving weekend he has to set up our SIL's 48 million lights and lit herd of deer, and was glad to have our help for once. Haha, we're not going to SIL's for TGiving, we're staying here. He yelled "That's BULLSHIT!" like 4 times.

Re: Miscellany
Sometime around the 11th of December, we'll put our light-up Hanukkah menorah in the window, and our holiday decorations will be done. (Hey, it's not like anyone would see lights in our neighborhood, anyways! We're all up, or down, from the road (in our case, more than 150 fairly steep feet).)
Only one of our kids--the oldest, who married a pagan and tried to go UU, until HER oldest asked if he could start bar mitzvah lessons--ever felt deprived because we were Jewish. She always wanted Christmas paraphernalia. When she was a junior in high school, we had an exchange student from Colombia. We bought a little live tree to set on our countertop, and bought a string of lights that we strung along the top rail of the balcony over our garage. She wrapped up in a sleeping bag and sat out there for hours, listening to the electronic Christmas music the set played. Later on, after she got married, had two kids, got divorced, and stayed with us for a while, we had a big ol' artificial tree and festooned the rafters in our family room with green stuff.
For the last couple of years, she and our grandkids (and, since August, her new hubby) have lived with my FIL (at the family's request, so that he could stay in his house--he just turned 90). There, she can decorate to her heart's content" Mrs. ShottleBop's family is Catholic.

Re: Miscellany
Did anyone else notice how close the Moon and Venus were this evening?
Clear skies are unusual here at the moment but the two were very close together before the clouds obscured them again - about 4:45 local time (GMT)

Re: Miscellany
California weather is weird; I had to turn on the heat last night and just turned on the A/C today. Or maybe it's me.

Re: Miscellany
I moved from San Clemente to Dana Point to Laguna Niguel and will hopefully not move again anytime in the near future since I finally bought a super-sweet hotel quality bed with linens and everything. And a new television and dining table and coffee table and couch and pretty much everything. Starting fresh. Sending an "updated info" email in a bit so if you want to be on it send me your email!

Re: Miscellany
Was there a point when 'Georgia cracker' wasn't an insult?
Some of those others don't seem all that flattering to me, though West Virginia seems to get off pretty easy*.

Re: Miscellany
Well, it doesn't claim to be flattering. It's just an objective resource listing different nicknames for the US. Like how we all call Missouri "Puke" and Nevada "Sage Hen," but Utah is so boring we just call it "Utah."
I think it's a good resource for non-Americans, if nothing else. I recommend our non-American posters all set aside a little time this Thanksgiving to memorize all of these state nicknames.
